As a woman traveling solo, always book your accommodation and restaurant reservations for two people. It doesn’t cost any more, you are more comfortable and it’s safer.

• Meaning: passengers who use the Stopover service cannot benefit from Touristanbul on the same route. It’s one or the other, not both — choose the hotel for longer layovers, the tour for shorter ones.

• You apply for the hotel through the online Booker tool or by emailing the stopover office for your departure country, at least 72 hours before the flight, or you lose the benefit even if you otherwise qualify.

⚠️ The catch: Transport to the hotel is NOT included, and the airport sits about 40km from the city center.

💬 What Travelers Say: The consensus is that a free 4- or 5-star room is a genuine win and one of the best deals in the sky. The most common gripe is how far the airport is from the historic core. Book in Sultanahmet and the walkability to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque makes up for it.

Etihad — Abu Dhabi (AUH)

• Max Duration: Up to 2 nights free

• The Perk: Free stay in select 3- and 4-star hotels in Abu Dhabi (or Al Ain)

• The Catch: 24+ hour connection; one direction only; book direct (no travel agents); book hotel at least 3 days before departure

You choose your hotel in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, with up to two nights free. You must be connecting through Abu Dhabi between two other countries — it doesn’t count if it’s your final destination, and it applies to either the outbound or return leg, not both.

🤓 Nerd Note — two rules people trip on: Flights booked through a travel agent are not eligible, and you must arrange your hotel at least three days before your flight.

• The free tier covers select 3- and 4-star properties; you book directly at etihad.com/manage. Most of the free inventory sits in Abu Dhabi city itself, so treat Al Ain as a day-trip idea rather than a guaranteed free night. And watch the calendar — rooms vanish around Formula 1 and big conferences.

💬 What Travelers Say: People who’ve done it describe the booking as almost suspiciously easy and the free nights as legitimately free — no credit card held for the room itself. The recurring note: Abu Dhabi feels calmer and more cultural than Dubai, which travelers either love or wish they’d known before expecting nonstop glitz.

Emirates — Dubai (DXB)

• Max Duration: 6–26 hrs (free) or up to 4 nights (paid package)

• The Perk: Dubai Connect — free hotel, meals, transfers, and visa on forced long layovers

• The Catch: Free version only when you’re on the shortest available connection

Emirates runs two distinct products. For Dubai Connect, the connection time between your inbound and outbound flights must be 6 hours or more and 26 hours or less.

When it triggers, it’s complimentary hotel accommodation, transfers, applicable meals, and a UAE visa. Separately, paid Dubai Stopover packages let you plan a longer stay.

🤓 Nerd Note: The catch is in the eligibility logic. You must be booked on the best available connection — the one with the shortest transit time in Dubai. Deliberately pick a longer layover and you’re disqualified.

• There’s also a cabin nuance: premium cabins qualify from 6 hours, economy typically from 10. If you want to design a Dubai stay, that’s the paid package.

💬 What Travelers Say: When Dubai Connect triggers, travelers rave — a free hotel and dinner on a brutal layover feels like winning a small lottery. The frustration is eligibility roulette: because it only happens when no shorter connection exists, people who deliberately want it often can’t get it.

Qatar Airways — Doha (DOH)

• Max Duration: 12–96 hours

• The Perk: Heavily subsidized hotels — starting rates from $14/night

• The Catch: 12-hour minimum; book through the Discover Qatar portal only

Qatar usually doesn’t give the room away, but they’ve subsidized it into near-irrelevance. If your transit time in Doha is between 12 and 96 hours, you choose from Stopover packages: Standard (4-star) from USD $14, Premium (5-star) from $24, Premium with Beach Access from $31, and Luxury (5-star plus, including breakfast) from $83 — per person, based on double occupancy.

That’s roughly 85% below standard Doha rates, available only through the Discover Qatar portal, not Booking.com or Expedia.

🤓 Nerd Note: You can book up to two stopovers per ticket — one outbound, one on the return — with a maximum of 4 nights, each night up to a 24-hour stay.

• Solo travelers should check the single-occupancy rate, since the headline prices assume two sharing.

• And there’s a genuinely free version hiding here: separate from the paid packages, the STPC programme offers a free hotel for qualifying 8-to-24-hour layovers on certain fares.

⚠️ Blackout warning: No bookings during Qatar Grand Prix week (Nov 23–30, 2026), and cancellation terms are strict once travel begins.

💬 What Travelers Say: The subsidized rate almost universally provokes disbelief, then delight — multiple travelers report walking into a room that retails north of $150, sometimes with a complimentary upgrade and perks like a rooftop-bar drink. The one consistent caution: the portal is the only place these rates exist, so don’t hunt for them elsewhere.

Saudia & flynas — Riyadh (RUH) / Jeddah (JED)

• Max Duration: Up to 4 days

• The Perk: Free 96-hour transit visa, sometimes a complimentary hotel night

• The Catch: Free hotel is fare-class dependent — confirm yours qualifies

The newer player worth knowing. Saudia’s enhanced Jeddah stopover program bundles a free 96-hour transit visa with a complimentary hotel stay, letting you explore Jeddah’s UNESCO-listed old town or the Red Sea coast.

🤓 Nerd Note: Saudi Arabia is aggressively courting tourism under its Vision 2030 push, and terms have been shifting fast in travelers’ favor. Check directly at booking rather than trusting a year-old blog you came across — this is a moving target.

Ethiopian Airlines — Addis Ababa (ADD)

• Max Duration: 8–24 hrs (free hotel) or up to 7 days (new visa-free policy)

• The Perk: Africa’s only major program — free hotel, meals, transfers, transit visa

• The Catch: Both flights must be Ethiopian-operated on one ticket

Ethiopian currently offers the only major stopover program in Africa. With a layover of 8–24 hours, regardless of cabin, you get a free transit hotel plus meals, transportation, and a transit visa.

Per Ethiopian’s official stopover page, passengers with transit time between 8 and 24 hours are accommodated regardless of the availability of alternative flights with shorter connecting time.

🤓 Nerd Note — fresh scoop: In April 2026, Ethiopia approved a new stopover-tourism policy granting Ethiopian Airlines passengers visa-free entry for layovers of 24 hours up to 7 full days, positioning Addis as a real alternative to Dubai and Doha. That opens the door to Lalibela’s rock churches, not just an airport sleep.

• One operational tip: keep your onward boarding passes handy, since the interline desk will require them to process your physical voucher package upon landing.

💬 What Travelers Say: Those who’ve used it describe it as a pleasant surprise — a free bed and transit visa they didn’t expect, with the in-terminal Skylight Hotel making it painless. The coffee-ceremony detour earns repeat praise; a few advise just resting at the hotel if your layover is tight.

Copa Airlines — Panama City (PTY)

• Max Duration: Up to 15 days (just doubled!)

• The Perk: Free stopover both north- and southbound; expanded partner discounts

• The Catch: Must be added at original booking; ~$50 in local taxes

Breaking news from my research:

Copa just lengthened the program from 7 to 15 days — you can now spend up to two weeks in Panama at no added airfare, and the revamp expanded the partner-discount list too.

🤓 Nerd Note: The stopover must be requested when the ticket is originally purchased — you can’t add it later — and Panama’s ~$50 entry/exit tourism tax is tacked onto the ticket price when you select the stopover option.

💬 What Travelers Say: Travelers love how effortless it is — select it at booking and you’ve added a country. The Canal and Casco Viejo are the highlights people mention most; with 15 days now available, expect more “we added a beach week in Bocas del Toro” stories.

Air Canada — Toronto / Montreal / Vancouver

• Max Duration: Up to 7 days

• The Perk: Free stopover transiting between regions; huge on points (see below)

• The Catch: Cash version is routing-dependent

Air Canada allows free stopovers when transiting between regions like the US and Europe. But the real magic is on points — see the Points Nerds section.

Hawaiian Airlines — Honolulu (HNL)

(Note: this is a built-in fare-rule benefit, not a branded marketing program.)

• Max Duration: No published time limit (fare-rule dependent)

• The Perk: A near-free Hawaii stopover on international multi-city tickets

• The Catch: Some fares require a phone call

Hawaiian lets you add a stopover in Honolulu en route to Australia, New Zealand, the Cook Islands, or Tahiti, on both departing and returning flights, typically for a small add to the total.

Book published fares with stopover provisions using the Multi-City search; if the cheap fare doesn’t show the option, you may need to call reservations to request it manually.

🤓 Nerd Note: Because this lives in the fare rules rather than a marketed program, the “no time limit” you’ll see quoted online is widely reported by travelers but isn’t a guaranteed published policy — confirm at booking.

Still, the “Hawaii and the South Pacific on one ticket” math is real and routinely cited as a best-kept secret.

💬 What Travelers Say: Travelers consistently call this one a sleeper deal and love that the add-on is cheap or near-free. The main practical tip people share: if the multi-city tool won’t surface the stopover on a discount fare, call — it’s often bookable by phone when it isn’t online.

Singapore Airlines — Singapore (SIN)

• Max Duration: Up to 4 nights (Stopover Holiday) / 5.5–24 hrs (Free Tour)

• The Perk: Discounted hotels & attractions via the Stopover Holiday; a free Changi city tour

• The Catch: The free tour cuts off at exactly 24 hours

Singapore’s stopover world has a few tracks. The airline promotes its “Singapore Stopover Holiday” program, offering discounted hotel rates, free airport transfers, and access to attractions like Gardens by the Bay or Sentosa, and you can also build a longer stay via multi-city booking.

Separately, there’s the famous free tour.

🤓 Nerd Note — the cutoff: The free city tour strictly requires a layover between 5.5 and under 24 hours, running about 2.5 hours. Hit the 24-hour mark and you’re reclassified as a stopover passenger and lose tour eligibility — so for the free tour specifically, longer isn’t better.

💬 What Travelers Say: Changi itself is the headliner — travelers genuinely look forward to the layover for the indoor waterfall and gardens. The free tour earns warm reviews as a no-effort way to glimpse the city; the main complaint is that popular slots fill fast.

Japan Airlines — Tokyo / Osaka (HND/NRT/KIX)

• Max Duration: Reported up to 6 days (fare rule dependent)

• The Perk: A free (or near-free) extra domestic Japanese city on your ticket

• The Catch: Subject to a ~$100 stopover surcharge on select discount economy fare classes from North America

JAL is wildly stopover-friendly, though it operates through multi-city/fare rules rather than a heavily marketed program.

Widely reported terms allow up to 6 nights in Tokyo or Osaka, with a $100 stopover fee for travelers from the US, Canada, Mexico, and China (free for others), and free domestic connections to 30+ Japanese cities when booked on the same international reservation.

🤓 Nerd Note: Treat the exact “$100 / 6 days” figures as fare-rule-dependent rather than a guaranteed published policy — they’re consistently reported but not always confirmable on JAL’s booking page. The free domestic add-on is the real draw: a whole extra Japanese city for $0 on the same ticket.

Cathay Pacific — Hong Kong (HKG): Great for Oneworld Alliance Loyalist Routing

• Max Duration: Fare-rule dependent (multi-city pricing available)

• The Perk: Free airport tour for 7+ hr layovers; massive value on Asia Miles awards

• The Catch: The “90-day stopover” claim is a myth

The “90 days” you’ll see online is overstated. Realistically, Cathay lets you stretch a Hong Kong stopover to roughly three to seven days at no extra airfare via multi-city booking, with a free guided tour from the airport for anyone with a 7+ hour layover.

🤓 Nerd Note: Cathay’s true strength is loyalty routing. Its Asia Miles Oneworld Multi-Carrier Award is one of the best award sweet spots anywhere — and worth understanding if you have transferable points. (Oneworld is the airline alliance that includes American, British Airways, Qatar, and others).

• The itinerary is priced on the total distance flown (up to a 50,000-mile cap), not per segment, and you’re allowed up to five stopovers, two layovers, and two open-jaws (meaning flying into one city but out of a different one — like landing in Rome but departing from Paris).

• Max it out and you can visit up to nine cities on a single award.

⚙️ The qualifying rules:

• Without Cathay, your itinerary needs at least two Oneworld airlines (say, British Airways + Qatar).

• With Cathay, you need Cathay plus at least two other Oneworld carriers (say, Cathay + Japan Airlines + American).

  • Two catches to plan around: the trip must start and end in the same city (a true loop), and mixed-cabin trips price at your highest class flown — so if you’re building a business-class round-the-world, keep every segment in business, or one first-class leg reprices the whole ticket.

💡 The play: Because of the generous five-stopover allowance, award travelers use this to build DIY round-the-world itineraries in business class for far fewer miles than booking the segments individually.

Air China / China Eastern / China Southern — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou

• Max Duration: Up to 240 hours (10 days), visa-free

• The Perk: Leave the airport and explore for up to 10 days, no visa

• The Catch: You must enter and exit through compatible regional port clusters

Not hotel programs, but beneficiaries of an enormously generous transit policy that just got bigger. In December 2024, China tripled its visa-free transit window from 144 to 240 hours — ten days.

The policy now covers 55 eligible nationalities (including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia), 65 ports, and 24 provinces and regions, for travelers with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country.

🤓 Nerd Note — the trap that gets people turned away: You generally must enter and exit through compatible regional clusters — entering Beijing and trying to leave via Shanghai is not permitted under a single transit exemption (you’d stay within the permitted zone, such as the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei cluster).

Also mandatory since November 2025: the China Digital Arrival Card (a QR code from s.nia.gov.cn), strictly enforced and checked by some airlines at boarding.

Fiji Airways — Nadi (NAN)

• Max Duration: Up to 96 hours

• The Perk: A free beach stopover that also waives Fiji’s departure tax

• The Catch: Once per round-trip; often must be booked by phone

The perfect transpacific palate cleanser. Fiji Airways offers a free stopover of up to 96 hours in Nadi — recently extended from 72 — and stopovers under 96 hours are exempt from Fiji’s departure tax (currently FJD $140 per adult).

🤓 Nerd Note: The free stopover can only be used once per round trip, and historically had to be booked by phone or travel agent rather than online — so if the website fights you, that’s why.

If you’re sitting on transferable points, the award-routing programs quietly beat every cash stopover on this list. An 'award ticket' just means a flight you book with points instead of cash.

Air Canada (Aeroplan) — The everyday workhorse. Each stopover adds just 5,000 points to the fare between two cities, on one-way, round-trip, or multi-city trips, one stopover per direction, for stays up to 45 days. It works on any Star Alliance partner plus non-alliance partners like Emirates and Etihad. The one limit: stopovers are only allowed in cities outside Canada and the U.S.

Air France/KLM (Flying Blue) — A slow-traveler’s dream, and a structural feature of the loyalty program rather than a cash-fare promo. Flying Blue’s stopover rules let you add a free stopover in Paris and Amsterdam on a single award ticket without spending additional miles — arguably the best slow-travel award perk in Europe.

Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer) — One of the more stopover-friendly award currencies, especially when paired with multi-city itineraries and Singapore stopover promotions. Exact stopover allowances depend on the award type, so check the current rules when you book.

Cathay Pacific (Asia Miles) — The maximalist’s dream, and one of the best award sweet spots in the world. The Oneworld Multi-Carrier Award is priced on total distance flown — up to a 50,000-mile cap — rather than per segment, and it allows up to five stopovers, two layovers, and two open-jaws. Max it out and that’s up to nine cities on a single ticket — effectively a DIY round-the-world.

• To qualify: two Oneworld airlines if you’re not flying Cathay, or Cathay plus two others if you are. The trip has to start and end in the same city, and mixed-cabin itineraries price at your highest class flown — so keep every leg in the same cabin if you’re chasing a business-class loop.

• Where it shines versus the competition: for a similar round-the-world distance, Asia Miles charges dramatically fewer miles in business and first than Qantas’s equivalent award.

🤓 Nerd Note: You don't need to have flown these airlines to use their rewards. The points from an everyday travel card (Amex, Chase, Capital One, Citi, Bilt) can usually transfer straight into Aeroplan, Flying Blue, or Asia Miles — free and often instant. So you book these trips with points you've already earned on regular spending, not miles you flew for.

1. Use the Multi-City tab. A standard round-trip search only ever shows the fastest connection. Switch to “Multi-City” (or the dedicated “Stopover” tab), plug in your bonus-city dates, and watch the airfare hold steady.

2. Land on the dedicated promo page. Searching “[airline] Stopover booking tool” ensures the promo codes and free-hotel links actually attach to your booking.

3. Apply early for free hotels. Most free-hotel programs (Turkish especially) require you to apply after ticketing — and the window usually closes 72 hours before departure (Etihad wants 3 days; Emirates requires at least 24 hours). Quotas fill, so don’t wait.

4. Decide before you buy when required. Copa and some others only let you add the stopover at original purchase. You can’t bolt it on later.

5. Book direct, not through a third-party site. Many programs (Etihad explicitly, plus the free-hotel tiers and loyalty perks) only apply to tickets booked directly with the airline.

6. Mind the visa. Leaving the airport means meeting the hub's entry rules — some hand you a free transit visa (Dubai, Addis, Jeddah, Doha), and China needs its Digital Arrival Card.

   1. For European hubs, the new Schengen ETIAS authorization is coming but not yet required: it's expected to launch in late 2026 with a grace period into 2027, so for trips this year you're fine — just keep it on your radar. (It'll be a quick €7 online form, like the U.S. ESTA, not a visa.)

7. Read the final payment screen. Especially on Lufthansa and SWISS, a multi-city fare matrix can shift taxes or add a package fee. Confirm “free” actually means free before you hit pay.

The good news? Some destinations make it surprisingly easy. Which is exactly what I love when I’m on vacation.

More pedaling, less scrolling.

1. Burlington, Vermont

The Vibe: A floating rail-trail that feels like cycling across the open ocean.

The Ride: The Island Line Trail (about 14 miles). Take the paved Burlington waterfront path north to the spectacular Colchester Causeway.

The Hook: This trail does something almost no other path on earth can pull off — it shoots straight out into the middle of Lake Champlain on a narrow, 3-mile historic railroad bed.

• You’ll have deep blue water on both sides, the Adirondacks towering to the west, and the Green Mountains to the east. When you hit “the Cut” — a 200-foot gap in the stone — you simply roll your bike onto a tiny bike ferry that whisks you across to the islands.

🤓 Nerd Note: The bike ferry exists because a historic railroad swing bridge used to pivot open here for boat traffic. A brilliant local nonprofit, Local Motion, keeps the ferry running all summer (kids under 6 ride free). Without it, you’d hit open water and a major dead end; with it, it’s the highlight of the entire trip.

📍 Nana Note: The causeway is crushed gravel and fully exposed to the wind, so it rides a touch tougher than smooth pavement — bring water and don’t rush. Stop in the middle, straddle the bike, and just look. This is the photo that ends up framed in the hallway.

2. 30A, Florida

The Vibe: Pastel beach towns, white sand, and endless golf-cart-style cruising.

The Ride: The Timpoochee Trail (18.5 miles). It runs the entire sun-drenched length of Scenic Highway 30A, with the 4-mile stretch through Grayton Beach State Park offering the most scenic views.

The Hook: A string of storybook Gulf Coast beach communities all linked by one continuous, flat paved path. You can literally bike from one town’s architectural style to the next, stopping for a swim, a gourmet taco, or an outdoor movie along the way.

🐢 Go Turtle: Treating the Timpoochee like a fitness workout is a rookie mistake. The joy is in the town-hopping. Pull off in Seaside for an Airstream-trailer snack, roll through Alys Beach to gawk at the stark white-tower architecture, and end in Rosemary Beach for an outdoor dinner.

3. Glenwood Springs, Colorado

The Vibe: High-drama canyon walls and a massive reward at the finish line.

The Ride: The Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail (about 16 miles one way, completely separated from the highway).

• The Grizzly Creek Spin: Starting at the trailhead near town (by the hot springs) and riding to the Grizzly Creek Rest Area is right around 5 miles one way (approx. 10 miles round-trip). It is widely considered by local outfitters to be the quintessential, sweet-spot distance for casual family rides because it’s a gentle, manageable grade.

The Hook: You’re riding deep inside a roaring Colorado River canyon, beneath limestone cliffs that shoot thousands of feet straight up. Because it’s completely paved and traffic-free, it delivers massive, rugged mountain energy without requiring any actual mountain-biking skills.

📍 Nana Note: Glenwood Springs has a historic, active Amtrak station right in the center of town. You can roll off the California Zephyr from Chicago or California, check into the historic Hotel Colorado, and walk straight to the bike path — no car required. (Just note the canyon trail closes in winter and occasionally during high water in spring, so confirm conditions before you go.)

4. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The Vibe: Classic New England summer — beaches, ice cream, and lighthouses.

The Ride: The Cape Cod Rail Trail (25 miles) from the South Dennis trailhead north to Wellfleet, winding past kettle ponds, salt marshes, and cranberry bogs through seven towns. Pick any segment — it’s built for stopping.

The Hook: If the Cape is already on your list, the ride is the easiest “yes” you’ll add all trip. It’s one of the best rail trails in the Northeast: mostly separated from traffic, remarkably stress-free, and flat enough that nobody’s complaining by mile three.

📍 Nana Note: Rentals along the trail include hand-cycles and a range of bike styles, and the flat grade makes it genuinely comfortable for older riders. Nickerson State Park in Brewster is a perfect mid-ride picnic stop.

5. Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

The Vibe: Majestic alpine-lake cruising with zero traffic stress.

The Ride: The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes (73 miles total, fully paved, mostly flat). The 8-mile stretch from Harrison along the lake to the Chatcolet Bridge is the ultimate crowd-pleaser. For a quick in-town spin, hop on the lakeside Centennial Trail.

The Hook: Mountains reflected in glass-calm water, wide lanes of pristine pavement, and enough rental shops that showing up empty-handed is barely an inconvenience. It’s a lakeside paradise where a downtown resort sits right on the trail, making it the perfect spine for a Pacific Northwest road trip.

🤓 Nerd Note: That smooth, paved surface is hiding a wild backstory. The trail was actually built as an environmental cleanup of old mining contamination, featuring a thick asphalt cap sealing the ground beneath. It’s a Superfund site reborn as one of the West’s best recreational rides.

6. Bentonville, Arkansas

The Vibe: High-energy adventure meets world-class modern art.

The Ride: The paved Razorback Greenway runs nearly 40 miles, connecting Bentonville to neighboring Ozark towns and passing directly through the grounds of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

The Hook: Yes, it’s Walmart’s home turf, but to the cycling world, it’s the self-proclaimed “Mountain Biking Capital of the World.” While it skews heavily toward singletrack thrill-seekers (perfect if you have teenagers), the paved greenway ensures the rest of the family can glide smoothly past stunning architecture and outdoor sculptures — for free.

🤓 Nerd Note: Bentonville’s newest boutique stay, The Compton Hotel (which opened in December 2025), is custom-built for cycling crews. They offer a dedicated cycling concierge, free bike valet, and an overnight washing service that cleans the trail dust off your bike while you sleep.

7. Whitefish, Montana

The Vibe: The quintessential Glacier National Park basecamp.

The Ride: The Whitefish River Trail, which winds gracefully along the water right to City Beach on Whitefish Lake (an easy, 1.2-mile cruise from downtown). For a longer, paved trek, jump on the connected Fish Trails network that loops around the town's scenic parks and greenbelts. (Pro-tip: skip the "Whitefish Trail" proper unless you’re after rocky, singletrack mountain biking.)

The Hook: While the surrounding terrain leans heavily toward hardcore road cyclists and windsurfers, this specific segment is a genuine all-ages showstopper that runs straight through the restored, cliffside Mosier Twin Tunnels (carved out of solid basalt cliffs in the 1910s) with the river glittering far below.

🤓 Nerd Note: Those twin tunnels were carved through solid rock in the 1910s, then deliberately filled with debris and left for dead when the modern interstate opened. Decades later, crews excavated and restored them — meaning you are pedaling through a piece of highway history that was literally buried alive and resurrected.

10. Mackinac Island, Michigan

The biggest World Cup in human history kicks off Thursday. And before a single ball is kicked, the off-pitch drama has already lapped the actual football.

I fact-checked all of it. It’s somehow worse than the rumors??

The Snakes. We Start With the Snakes.

Switzerland posted a map of their lovely San Diego training base. Gym, dressing area, and… “SNAKE AREA.” Caption: “Watch out for the snakes.”

It went viral in about four seconds.

Turns out San Diego is rattlesnake country, and the Carmel Valley canyon next door is crawling with them. Switzerland has vipers at home but zero wild rattlers. So this is a brand-new flavor of terror for them.

And it gets worse. Because while the Swiss were busy mapping their snake perimeter, their star forward, Breel Embolo, couldn’t even get into the country.

Less than three hours before the team’s flight, Embolo’s travel authorization got yanked for review. The reason? Court documents from a 2018 altercation that recently became a finalized conviction — a suspended fine, no physical violence, per the Swiss federation. The team flew to San Diego without him.

He got approved days later after an embassy appointment in Bern.

So: snake-infested base camp, striker stranded at home. The Swiss are not having the tournament they planned.

Japan vs. The Lawn

You may have heard Japan “almost left Mexico.” It’s funnier than that. They moved pitches twice.

First, a Tigres facility — patchy, dirt-marred, no thank you. Then their U-19 team’s field — also bad.

Finally they landed at rivals Monterrey’s complex. The saga went viral on Mexican social media and roasted Tigres.

A Japan official said the players were “calm” about it. Made me LOL.

The Distances Are Genuinely F.A.R.

Here’s where “biggest ever” curdles into “logistically cursed.”

This is the first World Cup across 3 countries (US, Canada, Mexico).

104 matches. 16 host cities. 48 teams. That’s 40 more games than the last World Cup in Qatar.

It’s also the longest ever, running June 11 to July 19.

This tournament is so big that following one team through the group stage could require a passport, multiple domestic flights, and three different transit apps.

Some examples of the madness:

• England has it worst among the favorites. Their three group games — Dallas, Boston, New Jersey — cover 1,721 miles. Reach the final? A London fan attending every match flies nearly 14,698 miles. That’s almost two-thirds of the way around the Earth.

• Scotland is back at their first World Cup since 1998 — a 28-year drought, ended with a bonkers 4-2 stoppage-time win over Denmark. They have a 1,250-mile hop ahead of them.

The “Most Polluting World Cup” Problem

The carbon platform Greenly projects 7.8 million metric tons of CO2 — about what 1.7 million cars churn out in a year. And 87% of it comes from travel, mostly flights.

The kicker? FIFA pledged at COP26 to halve its emissions by 2030. It set no carbon target for this World Cup at all. Cool cool cool.

And About That Heat…

It’s not just hot. It’s a scientific scandal.

More than 20 health, climate, and sports scientists signed an open letter calling FIFA’s heat rules “impossible to justify.”

The problem: only 3 of the 16 stadiums have air conditioning. (Dallas, Houston, Atlanta)

Miami, Monterrey, Kansas City, Boston, New York — all flagged as high-risk for dangerous “wet-bulb” heat. Researchers think roughly one in four matches could be played in genuinely unsafe conditions.

FIFA’s solution? A three-minute cooling break in the 22nd and 67th minute. Bring electrolytes, kids.

The Part That Stops Being Funny: The Visa Mess

This is the real headline under all the chaos. Four nations in this World Cup are caught in a brutal US visa stranglehold: Iran, Haiti, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal.

And the wildest case? Iran is commuting across an international border to play its own games.

After visas were denied to several staff, the team relocated to Tijuana, Mexico. Then the terms got truly absurd. Per Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, the squad is not allowed to spend a single night on US soil.

Land, play, cross back into Mexico — same day, every match.

(This directly contradicted Iran’s own spokesman, who’d cheerfully announced they’d arrive a day or two early to adjust. They will not.)

Their bus to the Tijuana stadium? Escorted by Mexico’s National Guard.

Then, it got worse.

Iran’s football federation announced today (June 9th) that its World Cup fan ticket allocation — the automatic 8% quota every nation gets — was withdrawn just days before kickoff.

Iran had already sold those seats to supporters who’d booked flights and hotels. The federation now says it “is unable to provide even a single ticket” to fans, and accused the US of a deliberate move to block them. Because apparently commuting across a border for your own matches wasn’t complicated enough.

And the chaos keeps coming:

• Senegal: players got strict security and customs checks right on the airport tarmac during boarding. The video went viral. Fans called it disrespectful.

• Iraq: striker Aymen Hussein was questioned for nearly seven hours at Chicago O’Hare. A team photographer was held 10+ hours and denied entry entirely.

• Uzbekistan (first-ever World Cup): the delegation was checked by police dogs before entering a New York stadium. Coach Fabio Cannavaro put it bluntly: “the check was only for us.”

• A FIFA referee: Somali official Omar Abdulkadir Artan was denied entry at Miami — despite holding a valid visa.

• The fans: dozens of ticket-holding supporters from countries like Morocco got their travel visas denied. Even some Scottish fans had approved ESTAs abruptly revoked, no explanation given.

FIFA’s response? A shrug. It says it isn’t involved in immigration, and that a host government decides who gets in.

And Then There’s Guadalajara

One of Mexico’s host cities has spent the spring under a security cloud.

In February, a military operation captured Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Cue retaliatory violence — dozens killed, vehicles and businesses torched, four Liga MX matches postponed.

Mexico’s response is enormous. Nearly 100,000 security personnel deployed across its three host cities, under a plan named — I am not making this up — “Plan Kukulkan.” After a serpent deity.

We opened with snakes. We’re closing the chaos with one too.

The Good News: New Kids on the Block

Four nations are making their first-ever World Cup appearance. And the stories are genuinely lovely:

• Curaçao — the smallest, least populated country ever to qualify.

• Cape Verde — a 525,000-person island nation that beat Cameroon to get here.

• Jordan — debut after a breakthrough Asian campaign.

• Uzbekistan — the first Central Asian country ever to reach the men’s World Cup.

It’s the most debutants in two decades.

The Money Grab (Buckle Up)

FIFA expects to clear $8.9 billion from this tournament.

But the real tea is the tickets.

For the first time, FIFA is using “dynamic pricing” — AKA prices float with demand. Some games are running ten times pricier than Qatar 2022.

The jaw-dropper: final tickets started at $2,030 to $6,730. By early May, FIFA had tripled its best final seats to $32,970. In Qatar, the priciest final seat was about $1,600.

And now prices are dropping. Because dynamic pricing cuts both ways.

A preview from last summer’s Club World Cup: a MetLife semifinal saw resale prices collapse from $473.90 to $13.40 on low demand.

So FIFA’s gamble is the obvious one. Squeeze too hard, get empty seats and dead atmosphere. As NYC’s mayor put it: “you’ll be priced out of it.”

And it’s not just FIFA squeezing. Sometimes the outrage works.

After backlash, NJ Transit cut its MetLife match-day train from a planned $150 to $98. The official Manhattan shuttle dropped from $80 to $20. (For scale: the normal MetLife round-trip train fare is $12.90.)

Even after the cuts? Reports say the trains were sitting around 94% unsold. Fans took one look and noped out.

The Pure Chaos of the Ceremonies

There isn’t one opening ceremony this year.

There are three — one per host nation. And the lineups read like a shuffle button having a breakdown.

• Mexico gets J Balvin and Tyla.

• Canada is giving us the ultimate polite-rock pairing of Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé.

• The US went with Katy Perry and Future. Sure. Why not.

One More Thing: Your Favorite Stadium Has a New Name

FIFA only allows official sponsors’ branding.

So every stadium with a corporate name gets temporarily rechristened for five weeks.

MetLife is “New York New Jersey Stadium.” Arrowhead is “Kansas City Stadium.” SoFi is “Los Angeles Stadium.”

Best of all: Gillette becomes “Boston Stadium” — despite being in Foxborough, a solid 30 miles from Boston.

And locals aren’t spared the gouging either. The event train to Foxborough is $80 round-trip on match days. Normally? $20 for NFL games.

PLANNING DESK: If You’re Actually Going

Some of you ARE braving this (my partner included).

Here’s the survival kit.

Rule #1 is simple: do not, under any circumstances, plan to park.

Skip the parking — it now costs more than your ticket. This is the most absurd number in the whole tournament. Group-stage seats started at $60. FIFA’s official parking passes start at $75 and climb fast: $125 for the Kansas City quarterfinal, $175 for the Dallas semifinal, $225 for a group-stage spot at MetLife. You can pay more to park your car than to watch the match.

The ADA parking scandal. Here’s the part that should make everyone angry — and it matters if you’re traveling with grandparents. FIFA added disabled-fan parking passes across 10 US cities. But instead of a baseline accessible rate, it pegged them to the same dynamic corporate tiers as everyone else. At SoFi, an accessible spot runs disabled fans $250–$300 per match. Disability advocates are furious. Rightly so.

At MetLife, you literally cannot drive in. Zero general parking, tailgating banned. No train or shuttle, no entry.

Rideshare — handy, but brace for surge. Uber and Lyft drop you near the gate and skip the parking circus. But expect $60–$100+ surge from Manhattan to MetLife, more on the way back. In Mexican host cities, use DiDi.

Arrive early, leave late. Aim for 2–3 hours before kickoff. Then wait 45–60 minutes after the whistle to dodge the crush.

THE COST TO RIDE: A Host-City Transit Index

Where you’re going changes everything. Some cities turned matchday transit into a cash grab. Others quietly nailed it. Ranked best to worst:

• Philadelphia — the hero. Thanks to a local corporate sponsorship deal, the ride home from Lincoln Financial Field on SEPTA’s Broad Street Line is free after halftime. The trip there is just the normal $2.90. Best value in the whole tournament, full stop.

• Atlanta, Seattle & Houston — under $5. Stadiums plug straight into existing rail. Regular fares, no premium gouge. Slow-travel heaven.

• Dallas (Arlington) — $4 each way. No rail to AT&T Stadium, so North Texas runs charter buses from rail stations for about $4 a ride. Annoying but cheap.

• Kansas City — $15. Shuttle buses to “Kansas City Stadium.”

• New York / New Jersey — $98 train, $20 shuttle. Even after backlash forced sponsors in, the MetLife train is still seven times the normal $12.90 fare for an 18-mile trip. And with no parking, you’re stuck with it.

• Boston (Foxborough) — the worst deal going. Rail to “Boston Stadium” (which is 30 miles away, remember) is locked at $80 round-trip. The express bus is $95. For a journey that normally costs $8.75.

World Cup Survival Tips Nobody Tells You

💧 The Great Hydration Betrayal.

FIFA has flip-flopped on water bottles three times in two weeks. The current rule, after a last-minute reversal: you can bring one soft, factory-sealed, 20-ounce disposable bottle into US and Canada matches.

• No hard-sided or reusable bottles. No refilling. (Originally they allowed empty 1-liter reusables, then banned all of them, then partially walked it back after fans and politicians revolted.)

• Bottom line: bring one sealed bottle, expect to buy water inside, check your venue’s rule the week of. In Dallas, Miami, and Houston heat, this is survival, not convenience.

🎒 Assume your bag is illegal until proven otherwise.

Security’s stricter than an NFL game day. Clear bags only — backpacks, oversized purses, coolers, and most reusable containers get you turned away. Bags can’t exceed 12” × 6” × 12”. The only non-clear exception is a tiny clutch, hand-sized (about 4.5” × 6.5”).

• Heads-up for families: diaper bags get rejected too. Pack the diaper supplies in a clear bag before you leave the hotel.

• Umbrellas — even tiny folding ones — are banned (apparently they count as weapons). Chargers must stay under about 4.7” × 6.7”.

⏰ Arrive absurdly early.

Boston officials warn security lines alone could top an hour. Multiple cities say come 2–3 hours before kickoff. Translation: if kickoff is at 3:00, your lunch reservation is at 11 am.

🚂 Follow the train crowd, not the Uber crowd.

Rideshare may be the single most expensive way to travel on match days. Thousands leave at once. Surge gets brutal.

When 80,000 people all open Uber at the same moment, you are no longer participating in capitalism. You are participating in The Hunger Games.

🏨 Stay near transit, not near the stadium.

Many venues sit in dead zones with terrible walkability and few hotels. A city-center spot near transit probably beats staying beside the stadium. Arlington is notoriously hard. Seattle is easy by train. For the final, Manhattan or Jersey City beats anywhere near MetLife.

📱 Download every transit app BEFORE you land.

Each city has its own ecosystem. A fan chasing multiple matches could need NJ Transit, MARTA, LA Metro, ORCA, the TTC, and the Mexico City Metro in one tournament.

🏟️ No ticket? Go anyway.

Every host city is running official FIFA Fan Festivals — giant screens, food, entertainment, some expecting hundreds of thousands. For families, casual fans, and anyone who looked at a $32,970 final ticket and briefly lost consciousness, this is arguably the better experience.

🔊 Leave the vuvuzela at home.

FIFA has officially banned vuvuzelas, air horns, whistles, and loudspeakers at every venue.

The unofficial World Cup packing list is now: passport, sunscreen, portable charger, clear bag, a fully charged phone loaded with transit apps, and a willingness to walk farther than you think is reasonable.

They had 4 years, 3 countries, and an unlimited supply of PowerPoint presentations, friends.

Respectfully, this planning job needed a woman with color-coded spreadsheets, armed with AI and unlimited coffee/matcha, and an unhealthy relationship with her open tabs.

We would have had this thing running like a Swiss train. (A Swiss train that, unlike the Swiss team, is not currently surrounded by rattlesnakes.)

Since then I’ve seen all the takes — the movies (mostly ‘80s / ’90s horror set in summer), the activities (carving watermelons like jack-o’-lanterns), the outfits (long cream dresses with chunky knit sweaters), yada yada yada.

Mostly because of the feeling it gives me (I am a die-hard autumn fan).

But here’s my take:

Summerween is the twilight of summer.

It’s when crickets replace the sound of lawnmowers. It’s when the sun drops, the air goes cool, and you reach for a big ole sweatshirt.

It’s hiking through a misty forest with pine needles stuck to your socks. It’s lake bonfires in Adirondack chairs, telling ghost stories about the very woods you’re sitting in. It’s the smell of campfire smoke mixing with sunscreen.

It’s a canoe pulled up on shore for the night — finally resting — with a little lantern still glowing at the bow. It’s drive-in movies, watching something old and black-and-white with popcorn, baseball gloves, a red-and-white checkered blanket, and twinkly lights.

It’s when your eyes start playing tricks on you, the bushes and trees throwing eerie shapes in the dark — all while you’re still warm and tingly from a whole day at the beach.

A little cozy. A little spooky.

So where, oh where, do we take these Summerween feelings?

Enter: Itinerary Nerd (she says humbly).

If you want to trade the crowded tourist traps for places where the mist hangs heavy and the history goes deep, here are 6 Summerween destinations.

1. Long Beach, Washington

If your ultimate Summerween fantasy leans heavily into drive-in nostalgia, boardwalks, and a Stranger Things or Goonies aesthetic, Long Beach is your perfect match.

It is a classic, slightly weathered beach town with dramatic, wide-open coastal elements: grey skies, waves crashing over giant driftwood logs, and kites flying in the late-afternoon sun.

When the sun goes down, a dense, heavy marine layer often drops over the beach with incredible speed. Suddenly, the neon lights of the town’s vintage arcades, carnival rides, and saltwater taffy shops blink through a thick sea fog.

It’s the smell of funnel cake mixing with damp sand, wrapping yourself in an oversized sweatshirt while walking past a dark, misty dune line, and watching the Pacific Ocean completely disappear into the night.

and, I have more when you’re ready for them.

To help you sort the life-savers from the law-breakers, I’ve broken down each one with a definitive Nerd Note reality check.

Fasten your seatbelts…

When traveling with kids visit a local consignment. I purchased a brand new high chair for $12 and a baby gate for $3. Used them for the week then re-donated them back when we left.

Nerd note: Highly sustainable, cheap, and saves a ton of trunk space. The only downsides are the vacation time wasted shopping and potential safety concerns regarding used, unchecked baby gear (like recalled items).

A UHaul Van only costs like 20 bucks per day to rent as opposed to over a hundred for a rental car.

Nerd note: Technically true, but Uhaul usually charges per mile. So, do with that what you will.

Fanny pack under sweatshirt with charger, wallet, etc. free extra “personal item”

Nerd note: A popular trick to beat budget airline restrictions. Just don’t make it look so bulky that you look like you’re smuggling an entire desktop computer under your hoodie, or the gate agent will call you out.

I work once every three months on the side at two separate hotels and now I have employee rate for IHG hotels and Radisson hotels.

Nerd note: If you have the energy for a hospitality side hustle, hotel employee discounts—which can drop a $300 room down to $49—are legendary. Just check on the hotel’s specific policy regarding the minimum number of weekly hours to maintain the perk.

Geocache at every destination. Locals place them and it is a great “hidden” tour.

Nerd note: 10/10 recommendation. This is an incredibly pure, wholesome, and completely free way to see unique parts of a city that traditional guidebooks and tourist traps completely ignore.

Quality Inn next to Atlantis in the Bahamas has reciprocity for all the Atlantis amenities. Atlantis vacay, Quality Inn prices.

Nerd note: This refers to the Comfort Suites Paradise Island (part of the Choice Hotels group, which includes Quality Inn). It’s a legendary, legitimate budget hack. Guests get full, free daily access to Atlantis Aquaventure waterpark, the 11 pools, private beach, and signing privileges at Atlantis restaurants—plus a free hot breakfast buffet. One gotcha: access runs from 3pm check-in day to 11am checkout day, and same-day single-night bookings don’t get amenity access, so plan ahead.

When travelling alone wear a wedding band. Stops a lot of unwanted attention in many countries.

Nerd note: A classic social shield, especially in highly traditional or conservative regions. It gives you a quick, socially understood reason to shut down unwanted romantic advances or prying questions from strangers.

Use Airbnb as a digital marketplace to find vacation homes, then book it directly through the realty company and save hundreds of dollars.

Nerd note: This one is true. Many high-end vacation properties on Airbnb are managed by local property management firms that list the same house on their own websites for 15-20% less to avoid Airbnb’s host/guest fees. You can reverse-image search the property photos or Google the title of the listing to find the direct site. Just keep in mind that when you book directly, you lose Airbnb’s “AirCover” protections if the host cancels on you last minute.

Not candy for the flight attendants since they always get candies. I always give hand creams and ChapSticks - they love it.

Nerd note: Brilliant tip. I think it’s really kind to give hard-working flight attendants little gifties, and it’s something we’ve done throughout the years. They usually receive chocolates or candies, so I think a nice mini hand cream or hydrating lip balm would be extra thoughtful with the dry cabin air and climate changes they’re usually facing. But also, anything is appreciated - so if you’re budget is mini Snickers, I say go for it.

Find the posh areas of town by searching for Lululemon or Hermes stores.

Nerd note: An incredibly smart shorthand hack. Premium and luxury brands spend millions on market research to ensure they only open stores in high-income zip codes. It’s an instant way to find safe, walkable, upscale neighborhoods with great dining.

Take a hotel shuttle to a hotel nearby and call your Uber/Lyft from there instead of calling it at the airport. Half the price.

Nerd note: While airports do tack on heavy “airport surcharges” to ride-hailing pickups, this hack trades time for money. Waiting for an unauthorized shuttle, loading luggage, riding to the hotel, and unloading can easily add 45 minutes to your day just to save $15.

I book my main seat cheapest (non-refundable), then the two seats next to me as refundable and cancel them at the last minute. Refund will allow a row to myself. Learned on TikTok. Done it twice.

Nerd note: Do not recommend. First, most “last-minute” cancellations mean the seats instantly go to standby passengers or people waiting for seat assignments at the gate. Second, if the airline notices a pattern of you booking fake passengers under your credit card to secure a row, they will close your frequent flyer account and ban you.

Buy a Samsonite Tote-A-Ton; it’s under 1 lb. I pack it in my carry-on and on the way back I use it as my checked bag for shopping and souvenirs. It also fits 2 carry-ons, so I only pay 1 checked bag fee.

Nerd note: Excellent hack for souvenir hunters because the Tote-A-Ton is a giant, virtually indestructible nylon duffel. Just be careful putting carry-ons inside it—ensure the combined weight stays under the standard 50 lb (23 kg) airline limit, or you’ll face an overweight fee.

Add Iceland on to your UK vacation by booking your flight with Iceland air and using their stopover feature to stay up to a week at no additional airfare. I do this for clients all the time.

Nerd note: This is Icelandair’s signature, officially promoted feature. It is a fantastic, completely legitimate way to check out the waterfalls and black sand beaches of Iceland for a few days on your way to Europe. Other airlines have similar offers for various destinations (update: the ultimate stopover guide is up! you can read it here).

Not a hack really, but I make playlists for every trip I go on and have the people I meet add in their favorite song. I have music to always remember.

Nerd note: LOVE THIS ONE. An incredible, beautiful way to build an auditory scrapbook of your travels.

A lot of museums have one night a week or month when they are open late but they don’t advertise it, you kinda have to dig. I’ve seen the Mona Lisa and the Sistine chapel with no one but guards around.

Nerd note: Late-night museum openings are real (e.g., the Louvre on Friday nights) and offer a vastly superior experience with cooler lighting and fewer tour groups. That said—unless you booked a private after-hours tour, that “just me and the guards” photo is doing some heavy lifting. A public night opening thins the crowds; it doesn’t empty the room.

Look for flights at 3am. Idk what it is about 3 in the morning, but they are the cheapest. Check every day and the prices will just randomly drop some days. I don’t pay more than $550 for Europe tix.

Nerd note: This “3 AM on a Tuesday” flight booking myth has been thoroughly debunked by airline data aggregators. Prices fluctuate constantly based on automated algorithms, not the time on your bedroom clock. Set automated price trackers on Google Flights instead and protect your sleep schedule.

Use a VPN plug in on your browser to put your location in the country you’re traveling to when looking for flights. Saved like $150 for a flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam.

Nerd note: Mileage may vary on this one. While it can occasionally work on local, regional carriers, major international airlines use complex dynamic pricing that tracks your overall digital footprint and search history rather than just an IP address. Give it a shot, but don’t expect miracles—and be prepared for the transaction to get flagged or blocked when you try to pay with a US-based credit card.

Pack a standard power strip in your carry-on. Airport gates never have enough outlets, so if you find a full one, just ask the person if you can unplug them, plug in your power strip, and give them their outlet back along with five new ones. You will become the terminal hero.

Nerd note: This is pure, unadulterated chaotic good. It sounds absolutely ridiculous to whip a 6-foot household power strip out of your backpack at a gate, but you will genuinely become a local legend to desperate travelers trying to charge their phones before a long flight. (I usually travel with this one anyway, but hadn’t thought to share it at the gate.)

Carry a “decoy wallet” — a cheap throwaway wallet with a couple of small bills and an old expired card — to hand over if you ever get mugged.

Nerd note: Smart, calm-headed safety move. If you’re ever cornered, you hand over the decoy without a second thought and your real cards, cash, and ID stay tucked away somewhere else entirely. The whole point is giving a mugger something to take so the situation ends fast. Keep it bulky enough to look legit—a few singles and an expired hotel key card or dead gift card sell the illusion perfectly.

2. Airport Matchmaker

Find two strangers who belong together. Not romantically (necessarily). Just — cosmically.

Maybe it’s the two people who both ordered the same airport sushi and are eating it alone at separate gates. Maybe it’s the man with seventeen personal item bags and the woman who packed everything into one tiny cube. Maybe it’s two people wearing the exact same travel outfit without knowing it.

Point. Agree as a family. Announce the match.

Bonus round: give them a couple name. Give them a backstory. Give them a future.

• Person eating soup at 6am with zero shame

• Someone on a very loud phone call about something that is definitely not your business

Once spotted, you must agree as a family. There can only be one Main Character per terminal. Choose wisely.

🧸 Turn it into a scavenger hunt. Find someone with a hat. Find someone with a really big bag. Find someone asleep.

🎮 They will find the Main Character immediately. Let them lead this one. They were born for it.

6. Next One Down

Pick a window. Everyone picks a color or airline.

You race to see whose plane lands first.

Pure luck. No skill. No strategy. Completely unhinged tension for something with zero stakes.

This is also a great game for the family member who “doesn’t want to play games” because it requires nothing except looking out a window, which they were already doing.

🧸 Just pick a color. Any color. Cheer when you see it.

🎮 Add a bracket. Losers are eliminated. Someone will take this very seriously. Let them.

These require a little performance. Which is fine. You’re at an airport. Dignity left at security.

7. The Gate Migration

A gate change has been announced. The entire crowd is now moving.

Your job: narrate it like a wildlife documentary.

“And here we see the weary business traveler — rolling bag extended, AirPods in — beginning the long migration toward Gate C-47. He does not know what awaits him. None of them do.”

Take turns. Commit to the voice. This is the game your kids will quote for the rest of the trip and possibly the rest of their lives.

8. Airport Translator

What the airport says is not what the airport means.

Take turns translating announcements in real time. The more accurate, the more points. Kids will be unnervingly good at this one. You have been warned.

• Emotional state — defeated? suspiciously confident? already in vacation mode at 6am?

• Execution — did they board smoothly or did they cause a bottleneck at row 14?

Assign scores. Announce them quietly. Group 1 almost always underperforms given the pressure. It’s a known phenomenon.

I’m watching everyone just exist together, and it’s not just relief I feel, or just happiness but…

Urgency.

The bittersweet kind. The kind that whispers: we don’t have unlimited amounts of this.

That feeling — more than any algorithm, any trend report, any influencer pushing a destination — is why multigenerational travel matters. And not just to me.

The data backs it up. The industry knows it’s coming. It’s here.

And yet families planning these trips are still hitting the same walls, the same frustrating booking experiences, the same rooms and experiences that weren’t designed for them.

Here’s what this piece covers — and why it matters whether you’re planning a trip or running a hotel:

The travel industry is scrambling to catch up with families who already figured this out.

This is the briefing they should have read.

Let’s start here, because this framing matters for everything that follows.

According to a 2024 study by hospitality consultancy Wanderland London (covered by Hotel Dive), kid-friendly, family-focused hospitality represents a $175 billion global opportunity for hotels.

The industry’s response so far:

-a mini fridge that keeps 2 yogurts and 1 juice box slightly cool

-maybe adjoining rooms if you call ahead, then ask the front desk, then wait for housekeeping to unlock the door

The gap between the size of this opportunity and the current industry response is the story. It tells you everything about where travel is headed — and exactly what families are navigating every time they try to plan one of these trips.

The data is coming from all sides — and it’s all pointing in the same direction.

Every article on this topic says “families want to reconnect after the pandemic.”

That’s true, but I believe it’s incomplete. There are three distinct forces driving this surge, and they each tell a different story.

Driver 1: The Clock Got Louder

“After the pandemic, everyone feels the clock ticking a little louder, and multigenerational travel has become the way families say, ‘Let’s make the most of the time we’ve got,’” says Kris Porter, a travel advisor with Travelmation.

This is the emotional truth that the data doesn’t fully capture but that every multigenerational traveler feels in their chest. COVID didn’t just disrupt travel plans.

For a lot of families, it interrupted — or ended — time with grandparents. Some families (ours included) lost those grandparents entirely.

The desire to spend time together was already building before the pandemic, but COVID dramatically accelerated it. Shortly after lockdowns ended, most family trips were essentially reunions — and that urgency has not faded.

The families doing this are making a deliberate decision about time.

“I think families are putting more value into making memories outside of day-to-day life, knowing that our world is unpredictable, and we don’t know when we’ll get more time,” said Andrea Heagney, a leisure travel advisor with Direct Travel. “Travel is a great way for a reunion that no one needs to host.”

The hotel handles it. The rental handles it. Everyone just shows up.

Driver 2: The Grandparent Economy

The Virtuoso x Globetrender Luxury Travel Trend Watch: 2025 officially coined a term for an emerging version of this: "XZ Beta Travel" — young Gen Z parents traveling with their children and Gen X grandparents, who typically finance the trips. But the pattern isn't limited to Gen Z.

Millennial parents — the core of today's multigenerational travel boom — are doing the exact same thing with Boomer grandparents.

The generations shift. The dynamic stays identical.

Grandparents are the ones writing the check for most multigenerational trips. But if you go to any major hotel brand’s website, family travel marketing page, or advertising campaign…

who do you see?

A mom. Maybe a dad on a golf course (sigh). Kids splashing in a pool.

Not usually a grandparent.

The marketing assumes the person paying attention to the ad is the same person paying for the trip. In multigenerational travel, that’s frequently not true.

Today’s grandparents are staying active longer, traveling further, and increasingly choosing experiences over things. They’re not asking whether they can afford to travel. They’re asking whether the trip will be worth everyone’s time.

That is a fundamentally different customer than the one the hotel industry thinks it’s talking to.

Driver 3: The Millennial Shift

Here’s a stat that doesn’t get enough attention:

89% of Millennial and Gen Z parents say quality time (not cost savings, not convenience, not the free childcare grandma provides) is their primary motivation for multigenerational trips.

This generation was raised on a very specific cultural message: experiences matter more than things. They are building their adult spending framework around it. And prioritizing travel over furniture. And concerts over savings accounts.

And now they are parents, raising kids with that same value system — and inviting their own parents along to witness it.

There’s also something quieter happening underneath the data. Millennials watched their parents age during the pandemic in real time, often from a distance.

Many are now acutely aware that the window for their children to know their grandparents — really know them, not just FaceTime with them — is shorter than they’d like to admit. The multigenerational trip is partly their answer to that.

“65% of parents prioritize travel experiences over material possessions," according to the 2023 FTA/NYU survey. That’s a generational values statement — and it has a direct spending implication.

• The average family spent $8,052 on travel in 2024, up 20% from the year before. These families are not cutting the travel budget. They are protecting it.

The millennial parent researching a multigenerational trip isn’t looking for the cheapest option. They’re looking for the right one — the one that actually works for a 4-year-old, a 14-year-old, and a 74-year-old at the same time, in the same place, without anyone having a terrible time.

That is genuinely hard to plan. It is a dramatically underserved problem. And it is worth a lot of money to whoever solves it well.

Let’s be honest about something the hotel industry doesn’t love to say out loud.

Rentals solve the space-and-togetherness problem that hotels haven’t cracked.

This is not a luxury preference. It’s a logistics preference.

But — and this is important — vacation rentals aren’t winning some of the business because they’re better. They’re winning because they’re solving a problem hotels could solve if they tried harder.

Sure, hotels can't offer a backyard or a full kitchen.

But they can offer something vacation rentals never will: consistency, safety, and service. The families choosing rentals aren't anti-hotel. They're pro-function.

And the gap between what rentals offer and what hotels offer is smaller than the booking numbers suggest — if hotels are willing to close it.

The short version: the hotel industry doesn’t need to become Airbnb or VRBO. It needs to solve the same problems that vacation rentals solved.

Space. Flexibility. A place where the whole family actually exists together instead of stacked in single file down a hallway.

The families who’d choose a hotel — for the reliability, the service, the safety standards, the fact that nobody has to sanitize the hot tub themselves — are right there, waiting. They just need the product to meet them.

When the FTA survey asked families about industry pain points, the need for more larger or connected rooms topped the list — even as 84% of parents said they intend to stay in hotels on upcoming family trips.

That stat deserves to be read twice. 84% of parents still plan to stay in hotels — not vacation rentals — for family trips, according to the 2023 FTA/NYU survey.

Hotels have not lost the multi-gen customer... yet.

The question is whether the product meets family needs when those families arrive, and whether they will re-book in the future.

Here’s where this gets interesting — and honestly, a little frustrating.

The hospitality industry has known for years that multigenerational travel is growing. Reports, trend pieces, conference panels.

They have the number. They know the direction.

And yet the booking experience, the room inventory, and the marketing still largely treat this group as if one person is making every decision.

In reality, here’s what’s actually happening when a multigenerational trip gets booked:

The grandparent is the financial decision-maker. They have the budget. They often initiate the trip. They care about comfort, safety, and not feeling like they’re in the way. They are also, statistically, the one writing the check — and the one most likely to have their needs completely unaccounted for in how the room was designed.

The millennial or Gen X parent is the research decision-maker. They are doing the Googling at 11pm. Reading the reviews. Calculating whether the adjoining rooms actually connect or just share a wall. Trying to figure out from four stock photos and a floor plan description whether Nana can safely navigate the bathroom. They care about logistics, accessibility, and having enough space that nobody loses their mind by day three.

The child is the influence decision-maker. According to the 2025 FTA/NYU survey, 74% of parents say their kids actively love to travel and have real influence over where the family goes — and that number is only going up. The child is not booking the trip, but they are absolutely affecting which destination gets chosen. If you’ve ever found yourself researching a place because your eight-year-old mentioned it three times in one week, you know exactly what this means.

Three people. Three completely different priorities. One reservation.

And most hotels are writing marketing copy aimed at exactly one of them.

The most common kids’ hospitality offerings in luxury city hotels right now?

Coloring books. Bath products. A tiny robe. A stuffed teddy bear. Maybe a “welcome pack” with some candy in it.

Occasionally — and this is the luxury tier we’re talking about — you might get a tent. A treasure hunt. A hotel-branded storybook. A video game console if you’re really lucky.

But hotels don’t need to become Disney to get this right. They just need to stop treating children like an inconvenient addition to the reservation. Because thoughtful, memorable moments — the kind kids and grandparents actually talk about when they get home — don’t require a theme park budget. They require someone deciding it matters.

Most standard hotel brands haven’t decided it matters yet.

That is the $175 billion sitting on the table.

Another big one: Wellness travel is no longer a trend.

It’s a takeover.

Wellness tourism is now among the fastest-growing sectors of the travel industry, already valued at nearly $1 trillion in 2024 and projected to exceed $1.4 trillion by 2027, according to the Global Wellness Institute — and it has evolved so far beyond a massage and a cucumber water that the spa is almost beside the point.

The 2026 wellness travel conversation is now about longevity programs, sleep-forward stays, slow-paced nature-led itineraries, nervous system regulation, and mental health retreats.

And almost none of it is designed for families.

What a spectacularly missed opportunity.

The multigenerational family is arguably the most wellness-motivated travel group that exists right now.

Think about who’s in that group:

• a grandparent who wants to move well, sleep well, and not feel like a burden

• a burned-out millennial parent who hasn’t had a quiet moment since 2019

• a child with sensory needs who thrives in nature and unstructured time

• a teenager who is, whether they’ll admit it or not, completely overstimulated and desperately in need of a forest

These people don’t need a 7-day biohacking retreat. They need a trip that lets everyone slow down together. Different pace. Same place.

And then there’s the accessibility gap.

Which is bigger than most family travel content ever admits.

Because we’re not just talking about Nana’s knees.

The 2025 FTA/NYU survey found that over 13% of families have children with special needs — and those families gave the travel industry a C- grade on inclusivity, citing major challenges in safety, staff training, and accessibility. These families who are actively trying to travel are being failed at almost every turn.

In 2025, 18% of travelers had someone in their travel party who required accessibility services. Nearly one in five travel groups. And 78% of businesses that already offer accessibility features are not promoting them online.

An NPR investigation published in December 2025 found that 35 years after the Americans with Disabilities Act, travelers still regularly encounter hotels that are inaccessible despite being advertised as compliant.

Disability travel expert Cory Lee — who traveled 150 days in 2025 and documents every accessible room on his site Curb Free with Cory Lee — noted that the first hotel chain to actually publish photos and videos of accessible rooms would immediately capture all the business from disabled travelers.

Because right now, families are showing up and hoping.

The data is clear: if one traveler’s needs are not met, the entire booking is at risk. Families don’t come back to properties that failed someone in their group. They don’t leave good reviews. They don’t recommend it to the other families in their orbit.

Hilton’s Confirmed Connecting Rooms product lets families book and instantly confirm adjoining rooms in three steps, entirely online — no phone calls, no follow-up emails, no finding out at check-in that the connecting room went to someone else.

Hilton’s own research found that nearly half of travelers booking trips together consider connecting rooms important — and yet until this product launched, the industry standard was essentially “we’ll try.” Most brands still don’t.

Take Canyon Ranch — one of the most established, historically age-restricted wellness brands in the country.

• In the summer of 2024, they launched their first-ever “Family Summer Camp” week at their Lenox, Massachusetts property, intentionally opening their doors to all generations — from young children to grandparents — for curated fitness, culinary, and outdoor wellness programming.

• Their CEO, Mark Rivers, summarized the shift plainly to Condé Nast Traveler: “We are finding that the passion for wellness extends across every age group and is more often at the center of family structures and strategies.”

That’s a major luxury wellness giant acknowledging what multigenerational families have known for a while:

a walk in the woods is good for a 70-year-old and a 7-year-old alike.

A farm-to-table meal is meaningful at every age. A morning without screens, a foraging class, a guided nature walk — these aren’t inherently adult-only experiences.

The emerging elite model — properties like Gleneagles in Scotland, where children can try falconry, archery, and off-road adventures alongside adults, or Reiters Finest Family in Austria blending 125 hectares of outdoor farm adventure with a world-class health and longevity center — shows what’s possible when an operator designs wellness for the whole family ecosystem, rather than just the adults who hold the credit card.

Hotels don’t need a biohacking pod and a cold plunge room to compete in the wellness space for multigenerational families.

They need a nature walk the grandparent and grandchild can do together. A meal that’s actually made from real food. A morning that starts slowly. A space where nobody is performing for anyone.

That’s just good design.

And right now, almost nobody is offering it.

Here’s what I think is actually happening, underneath all the data.

Families are reorganizing their priorities around time. Specifically, around the kind of time that doesn’t come back.

The grandparents who are healthy and present and able to get on a plane right now will not always be.

The children who think grandparent time is normal will eventually be teenagers who are harder to get in the same room.

The window for this particular configuration of your family — this exact age range, this exact ability level, this exact version of everyone — is finite.

Multigenerational travel isn’t just popular because people want to split costs or get free childcare from grandma. It’s popular because people are making a conscious choice to use the resource they feel most acutely running out of.

Time together.

I think the travel industry that figures out how to genuinely serve that choice — not just acknowledge it in a trend report, but actually build products, rooms, policies, and marketing around it — is the industry that wins the next decade of family travel.

I think about that every single year when September hits. There is something about autumn air that smells like possibility and nostalgia at the same time — like the world is both winding down and gearing up, and you’re standing right in the middle of it wondering how it got here so fast, trying to embrace every second.

It’s my favorite season. And I say that as someone who just spent three installments defending the quiet beauty of a January frost, the stubborn magic of a muddy spring morning, and the spiritual experience of a Bruce Springsteen road trip in July.

Autumn wins my heart every year.

Here we go: 6 micro-seasons from the first secret shift of August to the bare branches of early November.

This is the last installment of the American Sekki before we come full circle back to Winter.

One important note before we begin:

This calendar tracks a phenological pulse — the wave of seasonal change as it moves across the country. The dates are approximate and shift by latitude.

This isn’t a scientific calendar so much as a travel + nature almanac — a way of noticing what the country is doing around you.

~Aug 22 — First Turning A single tree goes red early. The rest will follow.

It’s always one tree first. You spot it from the highway and your brain registers it before you consciously do — a single splash of crimson in a landscape that is still completely green. The rest will follow. Not yet. But soon. And nowhere in North America does that first turning hit harder or earlier than the far north and high alpine, where autumn doesn’t wait for anyone.

• Kennecott & Wrangell-St. Elias, AK — by late August the Alaskan alpine tundra turns a jaw-dropping fiery crimson and copper almost overnight, spreading across the open hillsides above the glacier valleys in wide burning patches; this is the truest, most dramatic First Turning on the continent, and one of the most spectacular landscapes in the country full stop.

• Glacier National Park, MT — the huckleberry bushes turn crimson across the open slopes in late August before any of the trees do, spreading in wide patches of red that make the Going-to-the-Sun Road look like it’s already in October, weeks ahead of the valley floor below.

• Adirondack High Peaks, NY — at the highest elevations the ferns go russet and the low-growing blueberry shrubs begin to redden in late August, a subtle but unmistakable signal that the season has made its decision even while the maples below are still green.

Mission: Find the very first leaf that looks like autumn. Notice which plants are changing before the trees do. Wake up early enough to feel the first hint of temperature drop. Pay attention to what the light is doing at dinner time. Watch birds gathering on power lines before migration. Notice how fast sunset suddenly feels.

~Sep 7 — The Spinner’s Dawn Evenings drop fast. Spiders build elaborate webs overnight.

The light is still warm but something in the air has shifted for real. Every morning now the fence posts and tall grasses are draped in dew-covered webs that weren’t there the night before — the spiders are finishing their summer work and the world is starting to feel like it’s wrapping something up.

• Finger Lakes Region, NY — warm days, cold nights, morning fog off the lakes, and every fence post and vineyard wire draped in spider webs by sunrise; this is one of the most atmospheric early-September landscapes in the country, and the wine is good too.

• Oregon Coast — cools dramatically in the evenings in September while remaining warm during the day, the beach empties of summer crowds, and the mornings bring a low fog that makes the coastal headlands look ancient and serious.

• Grand Teton National Park, WY — by early September the valley crowds have cleared, the mornings carry a genuine bite, and the cottonwoods and willows along the Snake River begin their sharp golden turn while the Tetons above them are already dusted with early snow; it is one of the most complete early-autumn landscapes in the country.

Mission: Walk through dew-covered grass before anyone else wakes up. Find a spider web glowing in morning light. Notice how differently the air smells before sunrise. Find the first truly cold morning shadow. Watch sunlight catch on dew instead of leaves.

~Sep 22 — The Amber Slant Light goes golden and low. Shadows grow long by 4pm.

The equinox light is not the same as summer light. It’s lower. It’s warmer in color. It hits things from the side instead of above. The whole landscape looks slightly more like itself than it did in July — like the country finally exhaled.

• Black Hills, SD — the low horizontal equinox light hits the golden prairie grasses and pale aspen draws of western South Dakota at a slant that throws mile-long shadows across the hills; this is one of the most underrated autumn landscapes in the country and at equinox the light makes it look like it belongs in a painting.

• North Shore of Lake Superior, MN — the equinox light catches between the birch trees and the water here in a way that stops hikers mid-trail, the lake going steel-blue and the leaves just beginning to catch fire overhead.

• Cumberland Gap, TN/KY/VA — the tri-state ridgeline at elevation catches the equinox light on the Appalachian ridge in a way that is almost cinematic, and the view from the gap looking north into Kentucky is one of the most underrated in the entire mountain chain.

Mission: Watch golden-hour light hit something ordinary. Notice how early shadows arrive now. Find one tree glowing brighter than the rest. Eat dinner outside one more time before it gets too cold. Notice how warm-colored everything suddenly becomes.

~Oct 7 — The Maximum Burn The full color show. Maples, oaks, aspens at maximum burn.

Every year it happens and every year it feels surprising. The whole country loses its mind for two weeks and then it’s over. You should go. Every single time, you should go.

• Stowe, Vermont — the Green Mountains at peak foliage are as close to a perfect travel experience as fall gets in this country: the color, the small towns, the cold air, the covered bridges. It is crowded and it is worth every bit of it.

• Blue Ridge Parkway, NC/VA — the dramatic elevation changes mean peak color runs from early October to early November, with different species burning at different times across one of the most diverse and beautiful forests in the country.

• Maroon Bells, Aspen, CO — the most photographed mountain in the US for a reason: golden aspen groves reflected in a still lake with snow-dusted peaks above, at a moment in late September to early October when the whole scene looks like it was staged by someone who has never heard the word subtlety.

Mission: Drive somewhere with no agenda except the color. Walk through falling leaves instead of around them. Stand beneath aspens while the wind moves through them. Watch leaves spinning in creek water. Stay outside until the temperature drops sharply after sunset. Give yourself permission to be fully cliché about autumn - enthusiasm is chic. I said it.

~Oct 22 — The Release Leaves let go. The forest floor becomes the spectacle.

After peak comes the release. The trees let go all at once, and suddenly the thing worth photographing isn’t the canopy — it’s the ground. Look down. This is the most underrated week of the American autumn.

• Acadia National Park, ME — after peak leaf the crowds thin, the island feels intimate again, and the forest floor is so thick with fallen color that the ground is the thing worth photographing, not the trees above it.

• Litchfield Hills, CT — the rolling Connecticut hills hold their color into late October, and the small towns — Washington, Kent, Salisbury — are surrounded by forests still burning gold and orange when the rest of New England has already gone bare.

• Letchworth State Park, NY — the Grand Canyon of the East in late October, when the leaf litter fills the gorge and the waterfalls run through it, is one of the great overlooked late-autumn experiences in the country.

Mission: Look down, not up. Pick up the most beautiful dead leaf you can find. Notice how differently rain sounds on fallen leaves. Watch wind rearrange the leaf-covered ground, and let yourself appreciate the messiness of late autumn.. Listen to dry leaves scraping across pavement. Notice how forests smell after peak foliage.

~Nov 6 — The Bare Branch Trees surrender their leaves. The sky gets bigger.

Vermont calls it stick season, and the name is exactly right. The canopy is gone, the sky opens up, and the landscape becomes honest in a way it isn’t when everything is covered in green or gold. This is the most underphotographed season in America and one of the most beautiful.

• Great Plains of Kansas and Nebraska — once the cottonwoods along the river corridors drop their leaves, the sky becomes enormous in a way that is almost vertiginous, and the landscape has a stark, spare beauty that asks something of the people who stop to look at it.

• Upper Peninsula of Michigan — the birch and aspen stands go white and skeletal after the leaves fall, the lakes go gray, and the solitude of the UP in early November is genuine and total.

• Shenandoah Valley, VA — the ridges open up in November in a way they simply can’t in summer; from Skyline Drive you can suddenly see the patchwork of farms and river bends forty miles away through trees that have finally let you look.

Mission: Notice how much farther you can suddenly see through trees with no leaves. Watch birds moving through branches that used to hide them. Notice how quiet landscapes become after leaves fall. Find the last leaf still hanging on - give it a name. Walk somewhere windy and let it feel dramatic.

#1 mega airport in the J.D. Power 2025 Satisfaction Study. For the second year in a row. Good food, clear signage, friendly staff, and a craft beer bar serving gourmet Minnesota walleye. MSP is the Midwestern cousin who has their life together, drives a clean Subaru, and never makes it weird.

“THE LINE ACTUALLY MOVED”

Best TSA & Security Experience — Tampa International (TPA)

Short walks to security. Well-staffed lanes. Fast throughput. Tampa is the quiet overachiever of this entire list — and travelers who fly through regularly cite security as one of the least stressful in the country. Which sounds like a low bar until you’ve stood in a three-zone line for 47 minutes holding your own shoes like a defeated absolute failure.

“THE SLEEPER HIT AWARD”

Most Underrated — Salt Lake City International (SLC)

#1 overall US airport in AirHelp’s 2025 rankings. Clean, modern, easy to navigate, with mountain views on a clear day. Nobody puts SLC in their group chat and it is a genuine injustice. It is doing everything right and asking for nothing in return. This one is the functional baseline of civilization.

“BLINK AND YOU’LL MISS IT”

Easiest Curb-to-Gate — John Wayne Airport, Orange County (SNA)

Three terminals. One single, straight line. No trains, no tunnels, no transfers. Car to gate in under 15 minutes. SNA is what every hub would look like if airports were designed for humans instead of maximum confusion. A masterclass that nobody is studying hard enough.

“GOOD LUCK OUT THERE”

Worst Parking — Denver International (DEN)

The standard East/West garages run a seemingly reasonable $28/day — until you remember the airport is 25 miles from downtown and the short-term terminal lot quietly peaks at $144/day. That’s not a parking rate. That’s a personality flaw. LAX co-signs this award for structural chaos. Denver wins on audacity alone (and existential isolation).

“YOUR FITBIT IS THRIVING. YOU ARE NOT.”

Worst for Walkers — Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW)

An absolute marathon of a layout. If you reject the train, the walk from Terminal E to the far end of Terminal B is over 2 miles. Two. Miles. 168 gates. 5 terminals. Inside an airport. It’s also historically a delay magnet, with over 27% of flights running late. Bright side: at least you’ll have p-l-e-n-t-y of time to walk to your next gate… you’re going to need it.

“CULINARY ROCK BOTTOM, POPULATION: YOU”

Worst Food — Newark Liberty International (EWR)

Nearly 70% of Newark restaurants score below three stars. Average meal cost: $23.10 — the most expensive among the low-rated airports. One O’Hare traveler described “radioactive green relish, stale fries, and a lukewarm Chicago dog with the fries placed sideways in the bag” — and O’Hare still didn’t win this award. That’s how bad Newark’s food is. Chicago brought radioactive relish to a food fight and lost.

“YOUR CONNECTION NEVER STOOD A CHANCE — GODSPEED”

Worst for Connections — Charlotte Douglas International (CLT)

Concourse E handles the largest regional jet operation in the world and is exactly as narrow and crowded as that sounds. During peak connection banks, the hallways look like a stadium at halftime — except you have four minutes and no idea where you’re going. Charlotte deserves this award for the sheer psychological warfare of its connection windows. Honorable mention: DFW. See above.

“PEAK HUMAN DENSITY HAS BEEN ACHIEVED”

Most Packed — Chicago O’Hare International (ORD)

Highest number of visitors per restaurant of any major US airport. Getting a coffee can take 30 minutes. At peak times, finding a seat is a competitive sport with no referees. You will eat your $24 sandwich on the floor near Gate C32 and you will be grateful you found floor space.

“WHO DESIGNED THIS, A RACCOON?”

Most Disorienting Layout — Miami International (MIA)

Miami feels like several airports stitched together during a group project where nobody communicated and everyone got partial credit. 2.5-star reputation. Baggage system that fails 16,000 passengers a year. You will feel late there even when you are not late. The signage is written in a language that feels like a riddle, and every corridor leads to an unexpected escalator that goes the wrong way.

“MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR”

Worst Seating — Philadelphia International (PHL)

Low ceilings. Dim lighting. Carpet that has seen things and is not talking. Gate areas routinely run out of seating during delays, leaving travelers on floors wondering what choices led them here. Philadelphia has one of the greatest restaurant scenes in America. You would not know it from the terminal. Note: LaGuardia completed an $8 billion overhaul and is no longer eligible. PHL inherits this trophy by default and by design.

“IS THIS AN AIRPORT OR A FEVER DREAM?”

Quirkiest Airport — Denver International (DEN)

Denver’s second trophy of the evening. Still not a compliment. A 32-foot blue horse with glowing red eyes that literally killed its creator during construction (this is actually very sad). Two gargoyles living in open suitcases in baggage claim. Apocalypse bunker rumors. A time capsule that won’t open until 2094. Denver saw the internet call it an Illuminati headquarters and said: sure, let’s lean in. Maybe this belongs on the good list, but I find this airport creepy and I’m writing this article. So.

“GROWTH IS NOT LINEAR”

Most Improved, Still A Lot — Newark Liberty International (EWR)

Yes, Newark is collecting hardware today. Terminal A’s $2.7 billion renovation genuinely improved the experience. Terminals B and C are still a lot. The delays are still a lot. The food is, as previously established, rock bottom. We see you, Newark. We are rooting for you. Quietly. From a distance. Preferably from a connecting flight over a different state.

“YOU CAN’T GET THERE FROM HERE”

Worst Ground Transportation — Los Angeles International (LAX)

The “LAX-it” rideshare lot requires a crowded shuttle in bumper-to-bumper traffic just to reach your Uber, turning airport exit into a 45-minute personality-building exercise. LAX is also mid-renovation across multiple terminals, actively reshaping traffic patterns and terminal access in real time. Leaving LAX has become a multi-stage video game boss battle. Los Angeles is a beautiful city; escaping its airport is a test of human will.

A while back I fell down a rabbit hole reading about Japan's ancient Sekki — a thousand-year-old calendar that divides the year into 24 named micro-seasons, each one tracking a specific, fleeting moment in nature.

I found it so beautiful, and such a rare permission to slow down, that I couldn't help myself. I built an American version.

The American Sekki — a 24 micro-season calendar for the US natural year, grounded in what is actually happening outside. Plus 3 places in the US to experience every micro-season at its fullest.

I’ve published Winter and Spring. Today is Summer.

Summer in America arrives with the tall grass, then the fireflies, then the first morning you walk outside and the heat hits you at 8am.

Summer just shows up, turns everything up loud, and stays until it’s ready to leave.

I’ve come to think of American summer less as a season and more as a mood the whole country slips into — slower, louder, stickier, and more alive than any other time of year.

The kind of mood where a back road at dusk (AC on full blast but windows down, blasting Bruce Springsteen) feels like the entire point of having a car.

One important note before we begin: this calendar tracks a phenological pulse — the wave of seasonal change as it moves across the country. The dates are approximate and shift by latitude. This isn’t a scientific calendar so much as a travel + nature almanac — a way of noticing what the country is doing around you.

~May 20 — The Warming Water

Lakes and rivers reach paddling season. Frogs croak the night away.

The water is cold enough to be serious and warm enough to be worth it. This is the window serious paddlers and nature travelers live for — before the crowds, after the ice.

• Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, MN — the paddling season opens in late May when the ice is gone and the water is still cold and clear, and the nights are filled with frog song and loon calls bouncing off the lake surfaces in a million-acre wilderness with no roads.

• Buffalo River, Arkansas — the first National River in the US runs clear and cold over limestone in late May, and the bluffs above it are draped in spring green with no crowds and no noise except the water and the frogs below.

• Door County, Wisconsin — the water warms along the inland bays first, and the last of the cherry blossoms linger above warming inland bays while the frogs call from the wetlands below, creating a sensory combination that is entirely specific to this place and this moment.

Mission: Put your hand in a lake and notice it no longer hurts. Paddle somewhere still enough to reflect clouds. Find a dock and sit on it with your feet dangling over the edge - skip rocks, watch the ripples. Stay outside long enough for the frogs to become louder than the people.

~Jun 5 — Firefly Emergence

First fireflies blink at dusk. Nights become something to watch.

The moment the fireflies appear, summer is officially real. There is no better argument for being outside after dark than this.

• Congaree National Park, SC — deep inside this old-growth bottomland forest, a rare population of synchronous fireflies executes a coordinated, collective flash sequence that typically peaks in the transition from late May into early June, turning the dark swamp canopy into a pulsing, low-to-the-ground constellation.

• Allegheny National Forest, PA — home to its own synchronous firefly colony discovered in 2012, with typical peak viewing from mid-to-late June — less famous than the southern parks and far less crowded, with the same jaw-dropping light show playing out in Pennsylvania’s old-growth hemlocks.

• The Ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas — blanketed in ordinary (but still extraordinary) fireflies in early June, with no lottery required and no crowds, just a gravel back road, a humid evening, and a field of lightning bugs stretching into the tree line.

Mission: Sit outside after dark without a phone screen. Give it twenty minutes. Watch what happens. Notice how different darkness feels in June than in January. Watch the tree line carefully instead of the sky. Listen for cicadas starting underneath the fireflies.

~Jun 21 — The Lingering Sun

Longest day. Sun sets late and reluctantly.

The solstice doesn’t announce itself the way the equinox does. It just quietly gives you more light than you know what to do with, and then starts taking it back the next day without telling you.

• Acadia National Park, ME — Cadillac Mountain is among the first places in the continental US to catch the solstice sunrise, and the summer solstice dawn draws people who willingly set their alarms for 3am and consider it a reasonable trade.

• San Juan Islands, WA — still fully lit at 9:30pm on the solstice, the water glassy and gold, the light doing something to the color of the islands that photographers travel thousands of miles to find and still struggle to describe.

• Glacier National Park, MT — at this latitude the solstice sky holds light until nearly 10pm, and the Going-to-the-Sun Road in that final long hour of dusk — the peaks flushed pink, the valley below already in shadow — is one of the most dramatic sunset experiences in the country.

Mission: Eat something outdoors after 8pm. Keep the curtains open late. Take a walk at 9pm and notice how alive everything still feels. Pay attention to the birds still singing after dinner. Pretend sunset is the main event of the day.

~Jul 4 — The Deep Green

Canopies are full and heavy. Shade is a gift. Creeks run low.

This is peak lushness. The forests are as full as they get. The creeks are low and warm and the shade of a hardwood canopy in July is one of the most underrated comforts in American summer life.

• Blue Ridge Parkway, NC/VA — the forest canopy is dense and unbroken for hundreds of miles in July, and the creeks below the overlooks run cold and low over smooth stones while the mountain air stays ten degrees cooler than the valleys below.

• The Driftless Area, SW Wisconsin — a region of ridges and hollows that never got scraped by glaciers, deeply shaded, creek-carved, and impossibly green in early July, looking like a forgotten corner of Appalachia that the modern world hasn’t entirely found yet.

• Olympic National Park’s Hoh Rain Forest, WA — reaches its peak lushness in summer, with moss covering every surface and ferns taller than most adults and a canopy so dense it feels like being inside something alive.

Mission: Stand beneath trees dense enough to lower the temperature. Walk somewhere that smells green. Follow shade instead of sunlight for an afternoon. Let yourself move slower in the heat. Find moss growing somewhere unexpected. Stand in one location: notice how many shades of green exist all at the same time.

~Jul 19 — Cicada Roar

The heat peaks. Cicadas are deafening. The air shimmers.

Deep summer. No relief. Humidity wins. This is the moment the country leans all the way into the heat and stops apologizing for it.

• Caddo Lake, TX/LA Border — a labyrinth of dark bayous and old-growth bald cypress draped in Spanish moss. By mid-July, the swamp cicadas hit a synchronized pitch that bounces off the water, and at noon the wall of sound inside the shaded, humid canopy feels less like weather and more like a physical weight pressing down from every direction.

• Mississippi Delta, AR/MS — flat, hot, loud, and ancient-feeling, with the bottomland hardwood forests along the river corridor alive with an intense, steady insect drone that defines the southern summer landscape and slows everything down to a crawl.

• Missouri Ozarks — the intense summer humidity combines with a dense, rolling oak-hickory forest to produce a wall of sound that is genuinely disorienting in the best possible way, with a network of spring-fed rivers running a cold 58°F right through the middle of the heat.

Mission: Listen closely enough to realize cicadas pulse in waves. Sit somewhere humid enough to feel summer pressing against your skin (cold drink in hand). Notice how quiet, then loud, the world gets during a summer thunderstorm. Watch heat shimmer above pavement or water.

~Aug 7 — The Secret Shift

Still hot, but mornings carry a new coolness. Goldenrod blooms.

This is the thesis statement of the whole calendar. Nobody announces this season. There’s no festival, no foliage map, no Instagram moment. It’s just a morning that feels different — barely, almost imperceptibly — and if you’re paying attention, you catch it.

• Great Smoky Mountains, TN/NC — the goldenrod and asters take over open meadows and roadside edges in early August while the first subtle hints of autumn appear at the highest elevations, weeks before anything in the valleys changes.

• Northern California Coast near Mendocino — the marine layer shifts in August, mornings turn cool and foggy weeks before anything inland changes, and the coastal bluffs are covered in late-summer wildflowers against a gray-blue Pacific that has started to feel like October.

• Northwoods of Minnesota and Wisconsin — the first cool mornings of late summer arrive while the lakes are still warm enough to swim, and that combination — cold air, warm water, birch trees beginning to yellow at the tips — is brief and extraordinary and most people miss it entirely.

Mission: Wake up before the heat catches up to the day. Listen for crickets replacing birds at dusk. Open the windows in the morning even if you’ll need the AC later. Notice the very first leaf that looks tired. Find goldenrod blooming somewhere. Catch yourself feeling nostalgic before summer is even over.

Pack a picnic & go to a new park. Best if it's Lunchables, Capri Suns, and chips that turn your fingertips orange. Bring a Frisbee, a boombox, and a board game. Mall Madness, anyone? Loser buys the ice cream.

Buy fruit from a roadside stand across town. Or trek to a farmers market you haven’t been to before. The peaches are better when you had to drive for them. Carry this with you or make your own with all the books you’re reading. Bonus points if you use a paper map to get there - have your kids help you map the route to really blow their minds.

Become the tourist historian. Photograph the boring stuff - grocery runs, a front porch you love, a neighborhood cat, your iced coffee with the view behind it. Even better if you use a disposable camera. Develop it at the end of the summer. Bonus points if you accidentally get your finger in the corner of the frame.

Walk a new neighborhood just to look at front yards. Rate the gardens. Pick a dream house. Judge a mailbox.

Read a local magazine cover to cover. Discover something new about your city. Read it on the floor (or a bean bag) while you play one whole album in the background, start to finish. Use a highlighter to circle things you like.

Buy a slushie at a gas station. See if they sell comic books (my vote is always Archie).

Adopt a tree. I notice trees everywhere we travel (hello, monkeypod, you changed my brain chemistry in Hawaii) but not as much at home. Pick one. Name it. Visit it all summer. You’re the tourist now — it’s the landmark.

Go to a baseball game. Eat the hot dog. Sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” too loud. Paint your face. Stay for the fireworks.

Book a ResortPass at a hotel pool. Invent an out-of-town alter ego with no children and no one to feed dinner. Or bring the kids and make them pick fake names and commit to accents.

Take a drive with no destination. Windows down (A/C on… we like to be comfortable), 90s music up, get gloriously lost in your own city. A lost art. Wistfully think about places you went as a kid - Blockbuster, where are you?

Slow summer night. Pretend you’re on vacation with nothing to do the next day. Sit outside with ice cream and stay outside long enough to hear the crickets take over the night shift. (no phone, unless you’re looking at a star map). Make the kids come find you and announce it’s bedtime.

Ride a bike to nowhere. Not for the exercise. Just toward something that looks interesting. Bonus: wear a fanny pack loaded with friendship bracelets and pass them out along your way.

Hotel Lobby Hopper. Remember being a kid and wandering a hotel, convinced the lobby was the most glamorous place on Earth? Do that again. Pick a few beautiful hotels in your city - explore the grounds, browse the gift shop, sink into a lobby chair, order a fancy drink. Nobody knows you're ten miles from home and still have a dishwasher to unload when you get back.

• Bonus points for riding a glass elevator for funsies, throwing pennies into the lobby fountain, grabbing fistfuls of free mints / matchbooks from the front desk bowl, going round and round in the revolving door, and collecting every brochure off the concierge rack like they are trading cards.

Summer scrapbook. We’re talking magazine pages torn apart, Mr. Sketch scented markers, Lisa Frank / puffy stickers, and “Dear Diary” entries.

Spring in America negotiates.

It sends the birdsong ahead first, then the mud, then one warm afternoon that makes you think it’s over — and then it snows again.

I’ve come to realize that spring is not really date on a calendar you can count on.

It’s more of a slow, stubborn argument between the cold and the light, playing out over six micro-seasons from the first robin song to the grasses and blooms bursting up (then disappearing all too soon).

This is the part of the year that makes you want to be outside again. That reminds you the country is alive in ways that have nothing to do with a screen. That turns a drive with the windows down into something that feels almost necessary.

~Feb 16 — First Mud Snowmelt seeps down. Puddles pool in fields. Earthworms surface.

This is mud season in its truest, most honest form — the season people who live through it have complicated feelings about, and people who visit for it find quietly profound.

• Ozarks of Missouri — the rolling hardwood hills see the ground unlock in mid-February, rivers running loud and cold with snowmelt while the low trails turn to soft brown clay.

• Ohio River Valley — the broad bottomland farms along the river corridor are some of the most dramatic mud-season landscapes in the country, with flat flooded fields reflecting a gray sky and the first red-winged blackbirds arriving on schedule.

• Southern Indiana hardwood country — the creek-carved hills of Brown County and the surrounding valleys are legitimate mud season territory by mid-February, the hollows soft and dripping, the trails turned to clay, and the whole quiet landscape doing its slow, unglamorous work of waking up.

Mission: Walk somewhere muddy - leave tracks and look for ones that aren’t yours. Find one puddle reflecting the sky and stand beside it for a full minute. Pick up a rock and feel whether winter is still inside it. Find a place where winter and spring are touching at the same time (listen for water moving underneath ice).

~Mar 3 — The First Song First migratory birds reappear. Birdsong returns at dawn.

You don’t hear it coming. Then one morning it’s just there — a single voice before sunrise where there was silence the day before. Then two. Then the whole thing opens back up.

• Platte River, Nebraska — one of the great wildlife spectacles in North America, where hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes stage along the river on their northward migration in late February and early March, filling the sky at dawn and dusk with sound that carries for miles.

• Bosque del Apache, New Mexico — the wintering flocks of snow geese and sandhill cranes begin their raucous departure northward in early March, and the noise and movement of 10,000 birds lifting off a single marsh at sunrise is something that rewires you.

• Cape May, New Jersey — a natural migration funnel where land meets sea, and the birdsong in early March arrives in layers: first the residents, then the early migrants, until by mid-month the dawn chorus is genuinely overwhelming.

Mission: Crack a window before sunrise and listen from bed. Start paying attention to what time the birds wake up versus what time you do. This is a good time to start a birding journal — even one line a day counts.

~Mar 20 — The Sap Run Equal light and dark. Sap rises in maple trees.

The spring equinox is the moment the calendar turns official — but what’s actually happening underground and inside the trees is the real story.

The maples are running in Vermont and New Hampshire right now, but this is bigger than maple syrup. This is the moment the entire northern tier of the country is experiencing that first invisible surge of life — water moving up through root systems that have been frozen for months, pressure building inside every tree from Maine to Minnesota, the whole northern landscape quietly pressurizing before it blooms.

• Stowe, Vermont — the sugaring season peaks right around the equinox, when daytime temperatures rise above freezing and nights dip back below, and the sugarhouses host open weekends where visitors can watch the sap boil down and taste syrup pulled straight from the evaporator.

• Orange County, Vermont — the highest concentration of sugar maples in the country, and the most immersive way to understand the scale of what’s happening: not one farm but an entire county running sap through miles of blue tubing strung between trees.

• The Upper Peninsula of Michigan — the same sap-rising phenomenon plays out in the hardwood forests here in near-total quiet, with a maple season that rewards anyone willing to drive for it and none of the crowds that show up in Vermont.

Mission: Find a sugarhouse. Watch the steam. Taste the syrup before it ever hits a bottle. (a bucket list item I have yet to complete). Walk through woods that smell wet instead of frozen. Stand in sunlight without a coat for the first time this year. Notice which trees still look asleep and which don’t.

~Apr 4 — Bloom Rush

Dogwoods, redbuds, and orchard canopies erupt. Pollinators emerge.

Everything reproduces at once and it is spectacular, brief, and unforgiving if you blink. Book travel around this. It is worth it every single time.

• Shenandoah Valley Fruit Belt, VA — while the high peaks of the Blue Ridge are still gray, the valley floor erupts in early April: tens of thousands of acres of commercial apple and peach orchards around Winchester blanket the landscape in a rolling sea of pink and white blossoms beneath the thawing mountains.

• Washington, D.C.’s Tidal Basin — a legitimate bucket-list moment, especially framed against the Jefferson Memorial at sunrise. Arrive before 7am. The pink Yoshino cherry blossoms create a delicate canopy over the water, and the early morning light catches them before the crowds arrive.

• Hood River, Oregon — a 35-mile loop through blooming cherry, pear, and apple trees where the lower elevations of the valley open first, offering a stark and gorgeous contrast of soft white blossoms against the snow-capped wall of Mount Hood.

Mission: Drive somewhere with the windows down… if petals hit your windshield, you’re in the right place. Notice which blossoms smell strongest after rain. Follow petals blowing down the street to see where they lead you. Listen for bees before you look for them.

~Apr 19 — Pollen Tide Everything reproduces at once. The air turns yellow-green.

This is the season nobody glamorizes and everybody experiences. The air is thick. Your car is yellow. Your eyes are watering. It is also, objectively, one of the most alive moments of the entire year.

• Great Smoky Mountains, TN/NC — the biodiversity here is so extreme that more than 1,500 flowering species are releasing simultaneously in late April, and the haze can take on a visible yellow-green cast on warm afternoons.

• Shenandoah Valley, VA — the oaks, hickories, and wildflower blanket of the valley floor opens in a single week, and driving Skyline Drive with the windows down in late April means experiencing pollen as a full sensory event.

• Congaree National Park, SC — the old-growth bottomland forest here is one of the most biodiverse in the eastern US, and the late-April release of its cypress, tupelo, and hardwood canopy turns the whole floodplain yellow-green.

Mission: Go outside (with antihistamines, maybe?). Look at a puddle closely — the pollen floating on top makes galaxies. Stand near a flowering tree and listen to the insect noise around it. Watch pollen drift visibly through sunlight - try to capture this in a photograph.

~May 5 — Tall Grass Rising Meadows fill in. Wildflowers stake their claim along roadsides.

The prairies and meadows of this country are one of the great underappreciated landscapes in American travel. May is when they remember who they are.

• Flint Hills of Kansas — the largest remaining tallgrass prairie on earth. The dramatic controlled burns happen in April; by early May the fires are finished and what emerges is an electric, almost surreal neon-green carpet of regrowth spreading across black soil to every horizon, unlike anything else in the country.

• Columbia River Gorge, OR/WA — more than 800 wildflower species bloom in May, with lupine and hawkweed carpeting the hillsides against views of snow-capped Mount Hood, and the contrast between the wildflower meadows and the volcanic peaks above them is genuinely staggering.

• Texas Hill Country — the bluebonnet season often transitions to Indian blanket, evening primrose, and paintbrush by early May, and the wildflower corridors along the Hill Country roads are at their most diverse and colorful before the summer heat arrives. (thanks to Lady Bird Johnson!)

Mission: Stand in tall grass… arms outstretched - feel and listen to the wind moving through it. Pull over for a roadside wildflower field - walk into it (but watch for rattlesnakes in TX… they like bluebonnets, too). Walk slowly enough to notice tiny flowers beneath the obvious ones.

It divides the year not into four seasons, but twenty-four.

Each one lasts about fifteen days. Each one has a name.

These were further divided into three micro-seasons (kō), creating a tapestry of 72 distinct seasonal movements of life across the year.

It is a subtle, ancient rhythm that invites us to pause, observe nature’s fleeting changes, and align our daily lives with the present moment.

• There’s a moment for when insects wake up from hibernation.

• A moment for when morning dew first appears on grass.

• A moment for when grain starts to fill.

We don’t have anything quite like that here.

So I built one. An American Sekki — 24 micro-seasons for the US natural year, grounded in what is actually happening outside.

And then, because this is Itinerary Nerd and I cannot help myself, I went further: for every single micro-season on this calendar, I found 3 places in the US where you can experience it to its fullest.

Specific places, specific moments, specific reasons to book the trip.

One important note before we begin: This calendar tracks a phenological pulse — the wave of seasonal change as it moves across the country. The dates are approximate and shift by latitude.

This isn’t a scientific calendar so much as a travel + nature almanac — a way of noticing what the country is doing around you.

A thaw that hits Virginia in early February won’t reach Minnesota until late March. Trust your window over this calendar (or, make your own local Sekki wheel!).

Up first: winter.

~Nov 21 — First Frost

Ground hardens overnight. The last stubborn flowers give in.

There’s a specific morning when you walk outside and the grass crunches. The season has made a decision. Everything left from autumn that was still holding on has given up overnight.

• Great Smoky Mountains, TN/NC — the first frost turns the remaining asters, ironweed, and late goldenrod into crystallized sculptures along the trail edges, and the park in late November is as quiet and beautiful as it gets all year.

• Willamette Valley, OR — the wine country vineyards hold their last leaves until the cold takes them overnight, and the frost-silvered rows of vines in the early morning against the Cascades is one of the most quietly gorgeous seasonal moments in the Pacific Northwest.

• Nebraska Sandhills — one of the most remote and beautiful landscapes in the country goes silent and frozen in late November in a way that feels prehistoric, the grass going silver, the sky going enormous, and the wind carrying nothing but cold.

Mission: Walk across the crunchy, frozen grass before the sun touches it. Photograph the first thing this season that looks silver instead of green. Sit outside long enough to see your breath turn visible.

~Dec 7 — Short Light

Days compress. Dusk arrives before you’re ready for it.

Eight hours of daylight. Maybe nine. The sun is low all day, never overhead, and by 4:30pm it’s gone.

• Sedona, AZ — only about eight hours of direct sunlight in December, but the red rocks catch it low and gold from sunrise to sunset without ever getting overhead glare.

• Florida Keys — the short days don’t sting the same way when the water is still warm and the evenings are long and golden and the sun sets over the Gulf side in colors that feel like a reward for making it this far into winter.

• Olympic Peninsula, WA — when the forest goes dark at 4pm and the sky above the clearings turns cobalt blue in the blue hour, the rainforest looks like another planet.

Mission: Take a walk during blue hour instead of waiting for full dark. Sit somewhere west-facing and watch the shadows stretch. Light a candle before dinner, and let that little bit of melancholy settle.

~Dec 21 — The Sun’s Return

Darkest day. The turning point. Light begins its slow return.

The solstice is the bottom of the arc. The days will start getting longer tomorrow — imperceptibly, almost insultingly slowly at first — but the direction has changed.

• Chaco Culture National Historical Park, NM — one of the great solstice sites in North America, where the ancient Ancestral Puebloan buildings were built to align with the winter solstice sunrise; standing in an 800-year-old astronomical observatory at dawn on the shortest day of the year is an experience that stays with you long after you leave.

• Grand Marais, MN — as dark as the continental US gets on the solstice, and on clear nights, the northern lights can appear over steaming Lake Superior in colors that bounce off the open, churning water; in December the lake is too deep and too powerful to freeze, and the sea smoke rising off the surface into the aurora light is one of the most otherworldly sights in the country.

• Joshua Tree National Park, CA — perfectly positioned for dark-sky solstice stargazing, with minimal light pollution and a desert landscape that looks genuinely otherworldly under the Milky Way on the longest night of the year.

Mission: Stand outside at noon and notice how low the sun still sits in the sky. Watch the sunrise somewhere cold. Write down one thing you want more light around in your life in the year ahead.

~Jan 2 — The Frozen Still

Deep cold settles. Ponds ice over. The world goes quiet.

After the holidays, after the noise, the country goes quiet in a way it doesn’t at any other point in the year. The cold settles in and stays. Everything that was moving slows down or stops. This is not absence — it’s stillness.

• Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, MN — a million-acre wilderness in January where your footsteps may be the only human marks for miles, the lakes sealed under ice, the pines loaded with snow, and the silence so complete it has a texture.

• Adirondack High Peaks, NY — the frozen ponds and lakes in the high-peaks region create a landscape of extraordinary stillness and blue-white light, and the ice on the smaller ponds makes sounds — creaks and groans and long low booms — that are unlike anything else in nature.

• Yellowstone National Park, WY — barely recognizable from its summer self: the geysers steam against snowfields, the bison stand motionless in the fog, the crowds have entirely vanished, and the park reveals itself as the wild, ancient, geological thing it actually is.

Mission: Go somewhere silent enough to hear ice cracking. Listen to how differently snow absorbs sound. Notice how winter light turns everything blue at the edges.

~Jan 17 — The Long Gray

Winter’s most honest stretch. Bare, cold, and patient.

Winter stops pretending to be temporary. The holidays are over. The first snow has lost its novelty. The days are still short. The trees are still bare. And somehow, in the right place, with the right eyes, it is exactly enough.

• Coastal Maine — the ocean is steel-gray, the towns are quiet, the light has a flat silver quality that photographers and writers have been drawn to for a century; the lobster shacks are closed, the streets are yours.

• Oregon High Desert, Bend/Fort Rock — the high desert in deep January has its own particular austerity: rimrock dusted in frost, sage gone silver, the wide volcanic plain stretching flat and quiet in every direction under a sky that is the same gray as the ground; it is the kind of landscape that makes you feel both very small and very calm.

• Kentucky Knobs — a forgotten winter destination of rolling hills stripped bare, morning fog sitting in the valleys, and small towns that don’t see a tourist until spring.

Mission: Drive somewhere with no leaves and notice how much farther you can suddenly see. Make soup for dinner. Find one beautiful thing in a completely colorless landscape. Learn the difference between quiet and loneliness.

~Feb 2 — The Thaw Stir

Deep soil begins to loosen. Frost heaves crack sidewalks. The ground breathes.

This is the first exhale. Not warmth — just a loosening. The earth shifts almost imperceptibly, and if you’re in the right place, you can smell it.

• Shenandoah Valley, VA — the frost line starts fluctuating weeks before the mountains around it, and the valley floor fields show the first soft give of thawing ground while snow still caps the Blue Ridge above.

• Texas Hill Country — the first green begins threading back through the limestone creek beds in early February, and the cedar-dotted hills take on a new smell entirely, something mineral and alive rising from the draws.

• Coastal Georgia near Cumberland Island — the maritime climate means the barrier island’s interior is already softening in February, with the wild horses moving into the marsh edges as the ground opens up.

Mission: Step off the pavement and into actual dirt- press your boot down. Smell the air near water or wet soil, and touch the earth with your bare hand to see if it still feels frozen. Watch water move again — a creek, a gutter, a thawing ditch, anything.

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina — Ko Olina, Oahu ($$$–$$$$)

• The Setup: The named “Deluxe Room with Outdoor Spa Tub” gives ground-floor oceanfront rooms a private outdoor spa tub in a garden oasis with direct beach access from the room. Family-friendly, no adults-only restrictions.

Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort — Big Island, HI ($$$$)

• The Setup: All 150 standalone hale and kauhale bungalows are set on 81 acres of lava rock and feature oversized lanai and outdoor rain showers; the 37 kauhale suites add soaking tubs, private pools, hot tubs, and butler service. The Ocean Front and Beach Front Kauhale sit directly on lava rock above Kahuwai Bay. Their tagline says it all: “Rinse off under the sky and connect with nature in your private outdoor shower.”

It wasn’t just the lobby (which is essentially a 19th-century brewhouse crossed with a very good library). And it wasn’t just the hand-etched azure glasses (swoon). It was the Ice Box.

The ones doing it right aren’t handing you a free soda — they’re baking you bread as you open the door, rolling a candy cart through the lobby every afternoon, or employing an actual Marshmologist at the fire pit at dusk.

HOTEL EMMA — San Antonio, Texas The one with the margarita in a hand-etched glass waiting at check-in

The Free Ritual:

The Reality Check: The welcome margarita, morning coffee, and nightly macarons are the genuine freebies here — and they’re extraordinary. But… the Ice Box provisions and alcohol are charged. Don’t confuse the Ice Box curation for an open fridge.

The Extra Touch: The hotel itself is a 19th-century brewhouse. The signature scent — Milagros, amber and sandalwood — drifts through every hallway. Original brewery equipment is reimagined as lighting fixtures. (I believe you can reserve a table inside one of the converted brewing tanks!) ADOBE GRAND VILLAS — Sedona, Arizona The one where a warm loaf of bread is finishing its bake cycle as you open the door

Museums are genuinely extraordinary places to take kids. But “look how old this vase is” is not a game. It’s a sentence.

Kids don’t care about sentences. They care about winning things.

So… here are 15 games that will make your family actually look at stuff.

1. Your Palace

Everyone picks 1 object from each room that they’d buy for their imaginary mansion if money didn’t matter.

Rule: they have to explain exactly where they’d put it in their made-up rooms.

“Obviously this giant gold vase goes in my dragon library.”

2. Food Hunt

Assign everyone a food (or drink) and see who can spot the most hidden in paintings, carvings, tapestries, pottery, wherever.

This gets surprisingly competitive. Like, genuinely tense by the third gallery.

3. Museum Mimics

Recreate portraits, statues, and dramatic poses.

Extra points for Renaissance hand placement.

Plus, teens love pictures of themselves. And, will generally cringe laugh at parents when you’re re-creating the faint onto a chaise lounge.

4. Backstory Builder

Pick a random portrait and invent their name, biggest secret, what they’re thinking, and why they look so annoyed. Kids are very good at this.

“That man absolutely cheated at croquet.”

5. The Time Traveler Game

Pick one object you’d bring home to prove you traveled through time.

Explain: how you found it, how you’d hide it from the government, and whether it’s cursed. The cursed question is important.

Kids will commit fully to this. You will hear elaborate smuggling logistics involving false-bottom backpacks and decoy snacks.

Bonus round: everyone else has to decide whether they believe you or whether you’re clearly an agent of the museum trying to get the object back.

Paranoia is part of the game.

6. Tiny Tour Guide

Each child picks one artwork and becomes its official tour guide. They can make up facts or use real ones.

“This painting is called Sad Fruit Bowl Because Somebody Ate The Good Pear.”

Parents get to ask questions. Rate their answers.

7. Color Quest

Choose a color before entering a gallery, then spot it everywhere.

Works especially well for younger kids because suddenly they’re scanning every inch of the room instead of asking how much longer.

If they get at least 5 of each color, they get to pick out a keychain from the gift shop.

8. Freeze Frame

One person calls out “3… 2… 1… freeze frame!” and everyone has to instantly pose like the nearest artwork.

Very funny near marble statues.

Let your younger kids take turns with your phone - it gives them a mission and you can be “caught off guard”. Let the giggling commence.

9. The Museum Emoji Challenge

Find a painting that looks like 😳.

Then 😡.

Then 🤨.

Then 😂.

Teenagers especially get into this one. It requires actual emotional literacy plus art analysis, but we don’t have to tell them that.

10. Curator for a Day

You're in charge now. The museum director is on vacation. This is your moment.

Everyone picks:

• one object they’d spotlight in the center of the room

• one they’d move to storage

• one they think deserves its own room

This creates shockingly passionate debates among siblings.

11. Caption This

Make modern captions for ancient paintings.

Examples:

• “POV: someone touched the thermostat.”

• “Me pretending I understood the assignment.”

• “When your mom says company is coming over.”

12. Mystery Object

Find the weirdest object in the museum and everyone guesses what it was used for before reading the plaque.

Museum history gets genuinely wild. You will be wrong. Everyone will be wrong. It will be delightful.

13. Soundtrack Mode

Pick a song that matches a painting.

Or, better: what song would this person from the portrait absolutely have on repeat?

This question says more about your family’s musical taste than it does about 17th-century Dutch portraiture. Both are useful information.

14. The Escape Museum Challenge

If you were trapped overnight in the museum:

where would you sleep, what object would protect you, and which room would be creepiest after dark?

This one feels very Night at the Museum and will occupy children for entire wings.

This can also be an after-museum game while you’re waiting for lunch to arrive.

15. Fashion Detective

Find the fanciest outfit in the museum. The weirdest hat. The most uncomfortable-looking clothing.

And - the real challenge - something you’d actually wear today.

BONUS: Name That Painting

In every gallery, each person gives one painting a completely new title. The funnier, more dramatic, or oddly accurate, the better.
